Found these 2 gems on the drain plug when changing out the oil on my 05 stock block with 113k miles on it. Is this a warning of "boom" to come or nothing to be worried about? I haven't found anything of substance on my drain plug in the past.

Huh. Yeah that's not a present I'd like to find during an oil change either.

I don't know what it is but can say a few things about it:
  • It's ferrous, obviously because it's sticking to the magnet
  • It's not bearing material
  • It's not piston material
  • Has a random unmachined shape
  • Probably too big to be taken through the oil pickup
My best guess, casting flash from the block that fell into the oil pan.

Did you cut open your old oil filter after the change? Would be interesting to see what is caught in the pleats in there, if anything.

Maybe someone else who has seen something similar on their car can identify it exactly.

Yea I'm gona say casing metarial also. That'd be some horrible maintenance/abuse to meet its end at 113k.

Good news is the Wix filter looks great. I did jack my car up pretty high in the front when changing the oil this time. For all I know, that material has been in the bottom of the pan for a while. Feeling better now. LOL
