Hard to say for sure. It definitely not from an evo 9.
My best guess is an 8 or earlier evo. Does the seller not know where it came from?

He doesn’t. That is pretty much the catch . He is selling it for unbelievable cheap. But has no idea what it was pulled from. Are there any ways to to check by possibly pulling the valve cover or maybe oil pan?

I'm not sure. There probably is. But honestly, they are all pretty similar. If you have am evo 8, you should have everything you need on the current motor to put that one it I think?

If you are in the US and that engine is from the US, it basically has to be from an 8.

this engine has the secondary air valve which means it is a non US engine.. might be evo 4 onwards JDM unit, or come from a EUDM RS model... The only reason for it to be super cheap is that it is evo 4 unit with a broken thrust bearing...

Was hoping a non-US based person would comment lol. I am not super familiar with the earlier evo setups lol

Looks like a 4-6 engine. It has the early years valve cover.

Is there any difference in the crankshaft & head? Between 4-6 & 7-8?

No there pretty much the same. I don't know for a fact but everything i know the only real differences between the evo engines were the 1,2,3 were all the dsm style engine 7 bolts and the 4-9 were all 180 degrees reverse as we know them now. Motor mounts may be different but I can't verify that one either.

The only issue there was till the Evo 4 was crank walk, which was fixed in Evo 5 onwards. The engines of course do differ year after year but a tiny bit, just a few grams lighter pistons for example... If you get a cheap engine I strongly suggest you rebuild it with forged internals and DON'T cheap out on any part... The cheapest option is usually the most expensive.

That is the plan this is just a spare motor that would be getting built later on down the road . My second concern was making sure rods cams etc that i already do have will fit into this motor . I would hate to start from scratch again

Yeah evo 4 finally went to the current thrust bearing setup we have in the engines now. Such a bad design they overlooked trying to copy the 6 bolt setup.

Yeah they are interchangeable. If you search in the forum for engine codes there is a thread that explains by the engine number letters which car it's from.

I thought the 4 was the first year of the dual thrust bearing being it was swapped 180 degrees as well?
