Grinded 2nd once today :(
I have had it happen a couple times and I'm pretty sure both where caused by releasing the clutch slightly before the shift. The high release point on our clutch makes it very difficult to shift fast.

any time I shift about 3K fast it happens.... I'm talking about jumping from 1-2 quick and it doesn't happen anyother gear.... Ijust hope this isn't problems... I already replaced the TC at 2500 miles on a stock car
This was a small problem at the beginning. But just on the 1-2 upshift. I think about the 1-2 shift now and that is it. Like others have said take time for the 1-2 shift. I upshift the rest of the gears with on problems at all. Another problem for me at the beginning was that my last car was an s2000. Awesome gear box!! But I got over that pretty quick.
I was reading Automobile magazine's long-term test of the Evo, and here's a direct quote from the article, "We [Automobile mag] detected a grinding noise in the gearbox when shifting into fifth gear, so the synchro was replaced under warranty."
I have started a new thread on this topic. Perhaps Mitsubishi will fix all of our broken synchros.

i think its your error bro.. at high RPMS.. even timing slightly off can screw you up.. unless im racing on a track, before shifting at very high rpms.. i would let go of the gas for a sec before shifting..... or even double-clutching to drop the rpms abit.....
I have a new transmission problem though. On Saturday April 3rd I participated in a SCDA track day at Lime Rock Park. Nearly every 4-5 upshift at between 6,500-7,000 plus RPM produced a grind going into fifth. The difference is that I was able to get it in gear. I was not able to get in into 2nd with the same high RPM shift. The same thing occured at Watkins Glen on Monday.
IT hapened to me as well. Besides the 1-2 shift I also have 4-5 grind.(Watkins Glen also)
I do not want to find a fix for it. I WANT mitsu to do it.
I do not want to learn how to shift-I KNOW HOW.

My 1-2 grind happened in the same situation as Invoice Evo, turning left accelerating hard from a dead stop, shifting at around 7k RPM. That was my first and only grind, car has 1200 mile on it.
Once I put more power into my engine, I started grinding from first to second under WOT. I took some advice and replaced my clutch line with a SS version, replaced the shifter bushings and clutch bushing, and I removed the clutch resistor. Since I have done these simple mods, my car shifts as smooth as butter with no more shifter problems. The last thing I need to do is take the Redline fluid out of my tranny and put in some B&G syncroshift.

My Evo only has problems going into first on down shifts from any serious rpm. the syncros are not much to talk about. My 3g eclipse had probs twice with up shift grinding and had to be overhauled under warranty both times. I don't think the Mitsu 5 spd.s are worthy. Maybe the "05" 6 spd.s will prove to be better.
When it's hot every time I shift from 1st to 2nd over 5k it grinds. At 4500 it is smooth as butter. If I shift into 1st quickly if not fully stopped, it clunks. Going in to Mitsu next week.
it happens to me when it wants to i guess only when im shifting from 1-2 at 6500 or above..sometimes it does it sometimes it doesnt. But i get used to it i guess. i just shift slow from 1-2.... and at 2-3 and 3-4 and 5 i shift as fast as i can!

I mentioned the problem to my dealer. He said it would be difficult for them to road test it.
I mentioned this to Uncle Russ the transmission guy and he said try changing the lube.
