Short shifters: are they worth the upgrade??

i am thinking about buying either a b&m or kartboy shifter but wanted to ask everyone if upgrading to a shortshifter is worth it on the evo? the stock shifter is pretty short and i was wondering if these shortshifters would help in performance compared to stock? please provide any helpful information. thanks!

I've read several times now that short shifter kits will stress the synchros more, and since the synchros on my Evo don't feel that great to begin with, I'll be staying away from them. I am however going to be installing new shifter bushings (hopefully today or tomorrow).

I just installed the end link bushings (underhood bushings) and it makes a HUGE difference. Whoever it was that originally compared it to the rifle cocking was 100% dead on. It feels much more percise now.

After doing these two bushings the clutch feels fine to me. I don't personally see any reason to get the ss line and interior bushings. Not that they don't help, but it feels great now as is.

Just some info. Oh yeah, and unless you really like short shifters, I would stay away.

siantjab - if I'm not mistaken, the underhood bushings address a different issue than the ss line + restrictor removal mod.
Bushings = better shift feel
ss line-restrictor = better feel for clutch placement/engagement.

I agree maki, I was telling him not to bother with the short shifter, but was also suggesting the underhood bushings if he's interested in changing the way the shifter itself feels.

thanks everyone for your reponses, i think i will just stay away from the shortshifter.....i just placed an order from lancershop for the 8 piece and 2 piece bushings. i am going to upgrade my clutch to an exedy twin in a couple of months but i was wondering if its worth it to upgrade the clutch line before that?

Hey twstdevo,

couple-a-questions for ya ... just curious:
why are you going with the exedy twin?
Are you planning on going to the dyno day in June at Mac Autosport in Parker, Colorado? maybe I'll see you there...

Regarding the clutch line upgrade ... personally I thought it was worth it. I have a much easier time launching the car accurately after the ss line was put in. It took me a day or so to get used to the new clutch feel, though.

Ludikraut,

i am going with the exedy after countless hours of research. i feel that the clutch is the best overall for the price. also, i just bought Buschur Racing stages 1-4 and they definitely are pleased to recommend the exedy and say it has been great on their car. i have a strong trust in Buschur Racing and plan on adding only parts made or recommended by them.
as for the dyno day, what day is it and what time? i would be interested as i would like to see what i can make on 91 octane. hopefully by then i will have the buschur flash also.
which clutch line do you have?

since im not driving an evo and never will i cannot tell you if the short shifter will help but...i agree withthe post above about the end link....i have them on my OZ and they made hell of a difference...shifting is a lot more presice...(oh i have both end link and base bushings)...one of my uncles who has been into expensive cars his whjole life tested it out and said it kinda felt like a ferarri he drove....not too sure about that but what the hell...i like it

Nice - I keep hearing about the difference these bushings make, so I just called and ordered a set. The 2 piece under hood plus the 8 piece in car set. Guess I'll see how they work out.

I've done the clutch line and it makes a small difference in feel. It's something I notice, but it isn't something that will make a huge difference unless there is something else going on. If your clutch needed bleeding, replacing the line (and bleeding the clutch) would dramatically change your shifting.

Gotcha, makes sense if you're going with those kinds of mods.

There are two dyno days, one June 12 and one June 13. Shiv from Vishnu will be there to tune Evos (and probably anything else that shows up), which is why I will be there. I will be getting a Vishnu stage 1 installed June 11th. Unfortunately if you hadn't signed up already, both days are filled (although I guess you could get on the waiting list). However if you just want to dyno your existing setup, you can probably schedule it some other time with the guys at Mac Autosport, which is where the dyno is at.

I got my clutch line from www.lancershop.com
