To Claudius/Michaelk - Replacing Clutch in Evo VI
To Claudius/Michaelk - Replacing Clutch in Evo VI
Claude/Mike.. I got my spankin new competition clutch today. The standard clutch I was running on is now pretty worn out and I think I have a few more days before I fry the damn thing!. i was just curious, how complicated is it to replace the clutch in the Evo VI? What are the steps? (ie. Drain Transmission oil, remove the gear box..etc?)

I think you'll be ok just lowering the gearbox, but I'm not sure. My clutch was replaced while the whole car was apart.
I'll find out and will let you know.
I've got a cusco clutch cover for sale, cause it doesnt fit my paddle clutch disc. Let me know if that could be of use for you, or if you've got ane already.

Claude.. I got a clutch from Japan. It is a "Exedy" Cerametallic Racing Clutch. It came with the pressure plate and the cover along with the plate. But I am sure Cusco is better than Exedy?.
Would appreciate if you can let me know how complex replacing the clutch would be.

Actually, Exedy makes the Cusco cover.
I just did the clutch on my e5. I'll be posting pictures of it soon. Just as few steps you can follow:
Remove: Air box, all grounds and things held on to the gear box, wheels, big bolt that holds the axles, etc. Proceed under the car: remove downpipe, drive axle (just unbolt it from chassis, and pop it out of the transfer case), undo both mounts from underneath the car, remove that hole metal piece together with torsion bar, remove axles.
It's a good idea to put a hoist holding the motor and tranny, it will facilitate when lowering the box. Undo release bearing from inside the box (can be tricky, two men job), remove bolts holding the box to the motor, remove gear box mount (right side next to air box), and lower it.
Easier said then done. Will take a few minutes to accomplish.

LEE

I have a Ralliart Twin Plate Clutch and it is also made by Exedy. I just don't know if Exedy made the cover only or the whole thing. (Probably the whole thing)
Haven't installed them yet, still waiting for the stock one to wear out.
DIYATH: Let me know how is your new clutch. Thanks.

Actually even though it was sold as Excedy the clutch kit (all three : 3 puck clutch plate, pressure plate and the clutch cover has the "DAIKIN" emblem. I think Daikin used to be the mother company of Excedy. Anyways here are my thought on the new cerametallic clutch I ;ve installed
(1) Moving from a standard clutch to a competition clutch (especially if you are driving in traffic often like me) is a NIGHTMARE!! There is significant judder at low RPM's. However, Took me a few days to adjust and now I can drive in traffic without stalling the car like the standard clutch. Just needs some getting used to.
(2) Good news is .. Car moves so F---ng sweet now! Launches like a Tornado Jet from stationairy. I would never switch to a standard now! I think my 60 comes in about 2/10 of a second quicker now!
I think Ralliart twin plate you would be better than the 3 puck Daikin cerametallic I have.. but bottom line is go competition or twin plate if you wanna have some SERIOUS fun with the car.

Cool!
I haven't installed mine yet. Just don't have the time to bring to the shop. Been busy with work lately. Anyway, the Ralliart Twin Plate clutch also has an "EXEDY" logo on the cover (as well as a Ralliart logo).
I hope the clutch pedal wouldn't be a struggle to step at. Our traffic here is the worst in the world.
I'll let you know how the Ralliart is after installing it. Thanks!
