Generally speaking, if you get a lot of soot buildup it means you're running rich - although the only way to find that out is to either get a wideband O2 (lambda) sensor and meter installed or get your car on a dyno with a wideband O2 sensor ... might also mean that your exhaust tip is too close to the bumper.

... keep searching the forums for info on this stuff. If you want to learn, the info is there, just make REAL sure that you double/triple/quadruple check anything that anyone says. Better yet, read all the info, come to whatever conclusion you think is right and then verify it for yourself

That smell I thought was normal until I looked at my rear bumper and it was melted into the exhaust tip. Easy fix though. Just cut back the arch to give the huge HKS tip some more room.

My exhaust tip clears the bumper easily...no worries...

you can buy cover plates to protect your bumper they are dead cheap and simply self tap in underneath.

ALL evo's run rich standard. period...

by installing breathing mods such as zorst and filter, you are effectively helping more air in/through hence running slightly leaner. but there is plenty of fuel there for safety reasons

I bet he's running lean. That HKS suction kit really leans the car out.

I would just drive the car easy untill you get your flash or untill you can check you A/F ratio. That suction kit leaned mine out alot.

The Evo runs so pig rich from the factory, I seriously doubt the HKS Suction intake will lean it out enough to be dangerous...

I wouldn't bet my 30K car on that ... just running w/out a filter, using the stock airbox, leans it out by ~1 point. If you're going to install the HKS intake, I'd highly recommend checking your AFR, because it will mess with the MAF readings the ECU is getting.
