OK, here is the problem. I have 34 k on my Evo with the stock clutch, bought it new with 66 miles. At about 33, 800 I noticed a 5th gear grind, thought it was me and didn't notice again for a while, then it happened again, changed tranny oil and it still happened occassionally.

Took it to a local dealership on 6/8, the Service Manager stated they would pull the tranny out, but I would be responsible if Mitsu felt it was user error. I was confident that it was not, so I said take it out. (I am 39 years old and have been driving a standard since age 14) On monday the 21st, yes 13 days later, the Mitsu Regional Rep came out and with the information from the service people, stated it was user error and declined fixing it. The bill will be $3300 without replacing the clutch, with the clutch the total is $4200.

I just called the Warranty number and the Case Manager staded that the real decision is within the dealership even though the Warranty Regional Rep says yes or no. Because they get all their info from them.

Has anyone had warranty work done to their tranny, especially synchros? Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks

There is a tsb for the 5th gear syncro. Ask the dealer for it and then pin it to the regional reps forehead. Fight it, they're just trying to take your money.

Hold on a sec, that particular recall you cite to is for the REGULAR LANCER, not the EVO.

If you scroll to the very bottom, you will see one particular recall for the EVO, and one recall only.

I have met a fellow evo oewner & he had his 5th gear replaced underwarranty. I will try to find out more specifics.

How did the dealer determine it was user error/abuse? You have to shift, beside's it's 5th gear!! You wonder what these people are thinking if at all!

Good luck!

this was not a recall. can someone post a direct link to the TSB. The warranty with the EVO is a joke. MIT Quality sucks and customer service sucks. I'm surprise they lasted this long in the market.

Just got off the phone with the GM of the dealership, he stated he was in my corner and that Mitsu made the decision and gave me a number to call to make a complaint and have it go to the next level.

The bottom line is they told the rep they felt it was user error because of my mods and speed shifting. 34K on stock clutch, I don't think so. I asked about the TSB, and the Service Manager said that it was for changing parts, sounds like more BS.

The Service Manager stated if the synchros are beveled, then that means it was speed shifted or slamed into gear.

slt- Good luck, I hope you make out better than I did. Be prepared for your car to sit at least 2 weeks until the Regional Warranty Rep comes out.

WOT- If you can get info on that person who had warranty work done, please have him get in touch with me, thanks!

I could see that for 2nd, 3rd and 4th gear but why would anyone SLAM into 1st gear or 5th gear? 5th is a longer throw than all the other gears and there is no reason to slam into 1st in any circumstance. Mitsu is a really disappointing company and I fully regret doing business with them. I like my Evolution, but it is a sick feeling knowing what kind of company I am now involved with. You can bet that I will never give them another dime of business except for purchasing oil filters.

EVOTEXAS, You are so right ! I feel the same way. I absolutely love my car, but I am so close to getting it fixed and then selling it soley based on my dealing with Mitsu and their Dealerships! I have been PM'd by two Evo owners that have had this problem and they were both fixed under warranty! What gives? It has to be my dealership being an A$$!! I am at my wits end!

I had my 5th gear replaced under warrenty. Granted the car only had 5k on it, but it was stock at the time. Honestly, i feel for you, i've been in similar situations where i've been screwed by the dealer (if you remember the stolen car story from the dealer, that was me). I wish you the best of luck with your situation
