Angry Please Help Out a Fellow EVO Owner!!!!!

I think I am getting the run a round but I am not a mechanic. Please I need expert advice with this situation. I have my car at Mitsu. for the 5th Gear Grind which is a warranty'd item. Well my clutch happened to go at the same time 6,000 miles ...Well anyways I ordered a xedy twin plate for a replacement...Well the dealership told me that they could do the clutch at the same time as the 5th gear as everything will already be apart....Well I get a phone call today with the service manager telling me they made a mistake as they can replace the 5th gear from inside the car???...everything does not need to come out so I have to pay $550!!!!!!...wtf....idk this doesnt make sense to me how can you replace the 5th gear from inside the car???.....Thanks all in advance for the help

they're giving you a line of BS. changing 5th gear requires splitting the transmission case, which definitely requires decoupling it from the engine.

edit: no way, you can do that? OK I'm shutting up now.

NO, they can't replace 5th gear from inside the car. They have to take the transmission off the car.

i know the price is expensive in it self...but the question is in regards to fixing 5th gear from inside the car and not having to pull the tranny out???

Dont fall for that BS. In order to replace the 5th gear synchro, or any synchro, you need to remove the tranny and split the case, then the gears need to br pressed out on a hydraulic press.

Replacing anything inside the transmission requires it to be completely removed from the vehicle. They cannot replace a gear or synchro by dismantling the transmission while it's still on the car.

IMO, the dealership is trying to hose you to make more money from a warranty claim on the transmission. Most of the labor involved with a clutch install is removal of the transmission. It should not cost you more than $100 to install a clutch while the transmission is off the car.

The syncro was accessable on DSM cars by simply removing the end cover with the transmission in the car. Maybe this is possible with the evo?

Suggest you ask dealer for a quote in writing with what's involved in proceedure! That scares the living daylight out of 'em. Nice legal stuff.
