grindin durin down shift from 2nd to 1st

every since i had my car i notice that when i downshifted from 2nd to 1st it would grind unless i was at a complete stop. i talk to the guy who sold me the car at PEOPLE's Mitsu. here in vegas. and he said that every Evo he drove did that. well since the car is under warranty i took it in and the service department said i had somethin worng wit my tranny. its currently gettin fix and i miss my car very much (havin boost envy right now). but has any one else had a grindin problem downshiftin from 2nd to 1st. get back at me please

your never suppose to downshift into 1st. It doesn't let you until your like 5mph or less. IF your coming to a stop and are still rolling you have to goto 2nd or stop completely to goto first.

It's not every EVO that does this it's every CAR. You can only SAFELY and without damage put it in first when you are stopped. The grinding doesn't indicate there is something wrong with the tranny, just something wrong with the driver. Although, now that you have been doing this, there may be something wrong with the tranny.

well in my old car (a 2002 civic ex) u could down shift in 1st with no grindin at all. in my friends 98 eclipse and my other friend madza protege 5 no grindin at all. thats why i found it weird for the grinding. the evo was the only car i ever drove that grinded. once i found out it grinded i never down shifted into 1st after that. so i only did like a couple of times. but i took it back to mitsu, because i thought this wasnt right. they said they found some problems in my tranny. i guess i got some bad synchro's. so since its under warranty i dont have to pay a dime. i just got have a evo to drive at the moment.

and y does say im a bad driver. damn, i bein drivin a stick all my life. i learned how to drive on one. 6 years experience, not sayin im a master or expert. but i feel i know what im doin

Not saying that the syncros isn't bad but you should quit downshifting to 1st. You can if you want downshift when coming to a stop but only until 2nd or 3rd gear. I always go into neutral when I come into stop.

Yeah, not trying to call you a bad driver, but you really aren't supposed to do that. It's possible, but it's just not sensible, why not just go into neutral after 2nd?

If you're downshifting to make turn u shouldn't need to be below 2nd or 3rd anyway.

It's your car, so you can treat it however u want, but obviously something is right if ur grinding.

Some cars are more tolerant of this than others. Either way, you really shouldn't be downshifting to 1st unless you are at a stop....or unless you are going very slowly and are good at rev matching.

most of the time i usually just throw it into neutral when i brake (tryin to save the clutch a little). but sometimes i throw it into 1st because it was a habit i was taught when i first learned to drive a stick. most of the time when i would grind was when i was comin to a stop and just shifted to early. but like i said, 98% of the time i always just put it into neutral.

For those of you who don't know how to heel and toe or double clutch, don't force the gear into 1st until either you come to a stop or are below 5mph. You're doing more harm than good .....

1st & 2nd gears have 3 syncro's, so shifting is a bit notchier more so than the othere gears. 3rd & 4th have 2 syncros & 5th only has 1. Besides 1st gear is spinning really fast, you have 3 syncros to contend with.

Yes, other manufactorers have their tranniies built / designed better.

Besides, one of the first things my dad told me never to do, was "not to shift into 1st when rolling, unless you want to rat-f**k your tranny".

Those are words to live by.
