grindin durin down shift from 2nd to 1st
ive been in cars where people have been driving stick for years, they still dont know how to properly start in 1st..
I think what people are tring to say is if you're already rolling, dont use first. First is only for starting from a stop. You can pop it into 2nd no matter how slow you're going. Some non-4wd car owner manuals actually tell you to start in 2nd in snow. Good thing about this rule is it TENDS to make people (who drive a stick) stop fully at stop signs, which you should be doing anyway. Stupid to save 1/2 a sec and get a moving violation. But I ramble...
Oh, also.. if you're not shifting, take your hand off the shifter. it's not an armrest. You'll have more problems if you rest your hand or wrist on it..

Evo trannies suck!!!!!!!!! The point of syncros is to line the gears up so they will not grind. I have problems shifting into first even at speeds as low as 5mph which it would be pointless to start from 2nd. Also, in normal manuals the tranny will not let you shift into first unless you are traveling below 20mph and at that point it certainly will not grind. Anyway this is not the only problem that I have with my tranny and I may just have been one of the lucky ones to get a messed up tranny from the factory. Anyway I see a Shep rebuild in the future for me, LOL.

why down shift to first? you racing to stop signs? the craziest thing about all this is the mitsu dealer should have taken your keys away when you told him of this habit.
good luck

I'm not saying I doing it a lot... very rarely actually ... but if I'm being chased, or chasing something like a Z06 or 911... it gives you quite an advantage with your exit speed acceleration...
but yeah, generally not a good idea.

ya thats for your input everyone. like i said before i dont downshift to 1st all the time. just in the few cases that i shifted to 1st before i was at a complete stop. thats when i noticed the grinding. but i had also notice that getting into 1st was sometimes tough. my dad drove my car and also noticed this too. so i took it back to mitsu, and found out i had some bad synchro rings. its under warranty so im not worried about it.
hey bpclements, u seem to have some of the same issues i had. just go to mitsu and have it fixed. the only problem with that its the syncrho rings are currently on back order until july 15. which makes me think other evo owners might be having the same problem. but, the service worker told once the rings come in repair shouldnt take more than a 2 days
by the way...a some of u have said i dont know how to drive a stick or that i should get my evo keys taken from me. u cant fault me for something i didnt know. i was told (by my dad, who i guess is wrong now) that u can downshift all the way to 1st. so dont fault me on misinformation. i just guess newer cars or high performance cars just dont like it.
