EVO X - Difficulty getting in to 2nd gear from 1st.

This is the for the new X owners.

Is it difficult to get in to 2nd gear from 1st?

I had my X for a week now with 500 miles.

I been having difficulty with 2nd gear from day 1.

Dealership has told me it is normal.

Thank you.

....WHAT!?

are u saying that it is not going in and you have to force it in, or that it is "notchy"?

Very notchy and sometimes, seems like something is grinding.

3rd to 2nd is fine.

Just 1st to 2nd is a issue.

What your describing doesn't sound normal. Somewhat dissappointing for the dealership to tell you it is normal. Let's hope this new "improved" transmission doesn't turn out to be a typical crappy Mitsu tranny.

Same cold or warm...

If I shift very very slow in to 2nd after letting the rev drop. It feels Ok. (notchy but don't hear or feel anything grinding)

If I shift normal and don't let the rev drop. (I can feel and hear something clicking and grinding)

I did a search on the forum and some members had the same issue with there 8 and 9's.

I am not quiet sure, maybe this is normal for EVO. (I am used to driving a STI 6 speed for awhile)

there is a notchy feel / mechanical sound/grind that only happens when shifting from 1to 2 on mine as well.

Once the car is warmed up however, it goes away.

It's weird that two guys are having an identical issue. What your experiencing is not normal in VIIIs and IXs and I can't imagine that a grinding from 1-to-2 shifting would be normal on the new Evo X. In fact, that type of grinding wouldn't be normal on any car. Especially a $35K car. Good luck when you go back to the dealer to have them check it out again. I sincerely hope it's really nothing big.

Sounds like the synchros aren't that great on 1/2 synchro set up.......that blows....Do they use a special dog ring on these transmissions? What is the tranny code by any chance? I can probably narrow it down....i bet the dealer may just get a new one for you since they won't rebuild any.......keep us updated.... and good luck...

I wouldn't say normal, but it was quite common in 8 and 9. I had the exact same issue in my 8 from the beginning and therefore searched extensively. Sounds like the same issue still plagues the improved X tranny.

AFAIK, there was never a solution. Based on my experience and the comments I read, it gets better with milage and never becomes a bigger issue. I also found that, when pulling back the shifter, if I push it towards myself it grinds more. If you guide it more towards the center (as if moving it between 2nd and 4th) it grind a lot less, or doesn't grind at all. Just something to try...

The 8s and 9s have different hardware, so it's a moot point to compare them with the X. Everything that crops up with the X will be a different scenario.

Sounds the same as the issue on the VIII/IX's. When the tranny fluid is cold, I can't really shift from 1-2. Usually takes about a half mile of driving to get it warm enough to shift into 2nd, but even then, it's an exercise in rev matching. For the first shift, I usually just go to 3rd on my VIII.
