I actually had time today to figure what was going on:

1. shifting below 3.2k RPM normally (off gas, clutch in, shift, clutch out, gas) produces the grind 90% of the time.
2.shifting below 3.2k RPM like this: off gas, clutch in, wait ~.5-1second , shift, clutch out, gas, produces no grind, or anything. The gear falls into place just fine.

3. shifting 3.5-4.5k (I haven't tried anything higher) with "spirit" produces NOTHING - smooth as butter!!!

strangeness...
That is about right for me as well.

I have a another service appointement on coming up sat. will keep you guys updates

Someone needs to go into the service manual and look for anything that looks like a clutch delay valve.

The tranny has triple syncros for 1-2 gears, it shouldnt be grinding what so ever.

Its more of a notch or click than a grind, but lots of us are experiencing it. I felt it into third on my test drive the instant I upshifted it the first time.

Well, notchy...I dont know its too hard to tell with out driving it, and or inspecting the trans. I do know that on my buddys IX when it was brand new, it had the same kind of symptoms of what your describing. It kinda clicked and didnt go into 3rd smothly, never grinded, but kinda clicked. That went away complelty after 5000 miles.

I have not had any issues in the cars I test drove. I actually thought the tranny was way more responsive then the Evo VIII or IX was. It always just clicked in beautifully.

I guess some problems are just never fixed. Even after going through 10 model changes.

OP: find out what's going on yet? Did you try any of my suggestions? Add to that check your fluid level, but don't let the monkeys at Jiffy Lube do it if you know what's good for you.

Yep, gotta give them all the mitsu-flip when shifting. I get too used to actually being able to shift in my 240 that when I get in the EVO I forget how to do it lol.

Already, and supposedly these new evo x's are suppose to have better trannies. I can't believe this how mitsu is getting away with this ****. Giving the customers faulty transmissions again but in a newly designed evo. I can see already once again customer satification is not going to be one of mitsu's strong points. Not that it ever was anyway.

I say lets give it some time before we all start screaming "MITSU SUCKS". I am sure they aren't intentionally building a bad product. As more people get this car we will get a feel for whats going on. Something we should follow closely though.

I'm sure mitsu is not intentionally trying to give a bad product but the quality of their trannies are not to par, I always hear about these tranny issues with owners all the time it's like a plague. I actually owned a evo. When I bought it new from the dealer in yonkers, and on the way to taking it home I experienced a 5th gear grind and I was like wtf I just bought the car. Anyways I went along with it for a while cause I thought it would smooth out cause the tranny was still new, but it never did I tried changing fluids but that didnt help either. So I went along with this grinding issue for about 22000 miles. I never took it in to have the grind checked cause I needed the car it was my daily driver, and I like having a car to get around it makes things much easier on me, and besides I new it would take a long time if I were to take the car in under warranty to have the car tranny repaired. One day the tranny grind started to really annoy me so within a couple of days I took it in to the mitsu service center on tuckahoe rd in yonkers, we took it for a test drive then the mechanic took it for a test drove he took it around the block while beating the **** out of the tranny I was like wtf is this clown doing to my car. So when we got back to the service center they said they would have to replace the clutch cause it was sliping, and they were trying to blame the grind on the clutch because it was slipping but I knew and told them that, the clutch slipping was not the issue and how I was having grinding issues since the first day of having the car. Then they said they would have to charge me 900+ tax to change the clutch and that was without the cost of a new clutch. I asked the attendent their at the service center if I could have a better clutch installed when they go to look at the tranny and he said no, I was like this is really ****in great, mitsu is really giving it to me hard. So I ended up leaving and not getting it fixed. Anyways mitsu car service sucks and they service center is sleazy as is the mitsu dealership that practically tries to force you to buy an evo while being rood at the same time and then charge you more then what was aggread on to be paid for the car. And mitsu service of yonker on tuckahoe rd act like they never have customers with tranny issues at least thats how they acted when I went their and talked to them about the tranny grind. After What happen that day at the mitsu service center of yonker on tuckahoe rd, I ended up taking my car to the shop in norwalk ct to have a new clutch installed and they charged me about half the price of what mitsu was trying to charge me to have a new clutch installed. And the shop in norwalk ct is a great shop their prices are fair and jimmy the owner and his employees know how to treat their customers right. I would reccomend them if anybody considered to have work done by them on their car as I have never had issues with any of their installs of parts on my evo when I had it.

I understand you wanting to give them the benefit of the doubt. And, the tranny may very well work itself out. But, the way the dealership treated these guys is the real issue. All-new cars with all-new platforms and all-new everything will always have problems of some sort. Heck, even Lexus has problems with new cars. It's how the dealer and company deal with the customer when an issue arises. This is where Mitsu always shoots themselves in the foot.

Anyhow, I hope it all works out for the guys experiencing the "issue"...they really shouldn't have any issues on a car with a starting MSRP of $33K.
