Sticking MBC?

In the last week or so I've seen an intermittant issue with my boost. Occasionally when I accelerate at wide open throttle I'm seeing a surge of boost occur. It seems that boost will build to about 10 to 12 psi, hesitate there for a moment and then surge to 20psi. I usually see this in 2nd gear when I stomp on the gas at 4,000 rpm or so. I haven't noticed the problem in 3rd gear, probably since things are happen a bit more slowly, whatever is sticking has time to react or get unstuck.

Does anyone have any ideas?

I'm thinking I've got a sticking boost controller and it's not feeding enough pressure to keep the wastegate closed. I'm using a Hallman Pro RX (the one with the ceramic ball). In the past it's been VERY reliable. I guess I'll pull it apart this weekend and see if it needs to be cleaned. It's feasible something (a small bit of rubber hose or something) has worked it's way into the valve from the boost supply line. If the wastegate or BPV was sticking open I doubt I would see any boost at all.
