Exhaust Opinions

Hey all, I'm pretty new here, so bear with me. I've searched this site browsing through articles, posts, and pictures of other people's exhaust setups, and I can't really find what I'm looking for. I hope I don't get too wordy......

What I want is a quality turbo-back setup that doesn't sound ricey. Here's where I ask you to bear with me. Around where I live, there aren't many Evos, let alone modded Evos. At least none that I've seen. I've talked to one guy in town that has the Turbo XS system on his car, but I haven't seen/heard his car yet. So, what I'm getting at is this, I have NO idea what the Evo sounds like with an aftermarket exhaust. I don't think that clips on the Internet are accurate representations of what exhausts sound like either.

Since this is the smallest engine that I've ever owned, I'm paranoid that an aftermarket system will sound "tinny". (My paranoia is probably ridiculous, so that's why I ask you guys to bear with me.) My last car was an IS300, and the exhaust on that car was a Toyomoto Header with a straight pipe through a GReddy Evo exhaust. I loved the way that sounded.

Here are the exhausts that I'm considering: (Any and all comments, opinions, and information on these products are welcome.)
  • HKS Carbon/Ti (or Hi-power or 30th Hi power)
  • Espelir JGT500
  • Helix
  • Perrin
  • RnR / HKS Carbon Ti (They seem to have a great deal on turbo-back systems)
That's as far as I've gotten. The things I want are: good sound, good looks, good performance. I prefer straight-cut, big 4+" tips. I know HKS is a great company, and I've read good things about Perrin, but that's about it. My knowledge about the EVO is very limited. Please help, and sorry I got so wordy.

I have the B&B exhaust. I had the same concerns as you. I am getting old and I dont want to drive on the street and have a bumble bee in heat mating in my tail pipe. I asked Mike Huff at Vivid, whom I bought the system from, for different options. He recommended the B&B. In my opinion, b/c everyone has one, is that is sounds awesome. Its not loud at all, maybe a bit more than stock and it gives you the sleeper look. It doesnt have a coffee can hanging on the rear end either. Just make sure you install it on a lift because at the rear connection it gets tight to bolt it together on your back.

Do not get Espelir I have heard bad things. I have the 30th HKS Hi-Power and I love it, but it is a little high in cost. If I did not get this exhaust I would have went with Helix no question they make great exhaust parts. If you want straight out get the Helix. I do not think any exhaust sound ricey for the Evo because they are all 3". When you hear ricey sounds coming from a Civic etc... it's mostly because they are not 3". If you get a 3" dp with a Hi-Flow cat and a 3" cat back you will not hear a ricey sound. I could be wrong, but from what I have heard this should not happen.

I have the HKS 30th Anniversary...it's all stainless, unlike the regular Hi-Power, so it will last...the sound is awesome...you can't go wrong with the HKS 30th...

Thanks for all the advice and info, guys. I'm pretty much deciding between the Helix and RnR/HKS Carbon Ti. Any more advice or opinions on Helix or the RnR/HKS combo?

I just bought the RNR catback with the HKS Carbon-Ti and I must say it looks and sounds awesome. It has a nice low grumble at idle, with a deep throuty sound at WOT. I started a thread in this section and I will post pictures as soon as I get my neighbors digital camera. Although mine is a catback, I cannot comment as to whether the turboback will fit with the lower braces on the car.

Luckily the EVO's 4G63 has a nice, natural low gowl to it. An exhaust manufacturer would have to go out of there way to make it sound "ricer" or "tinny."

The WORKS Exhale series offers lots of options and are TIG welded by hand using jigs crafted from brand new Mitsubishi exhaust components. Fitment and design are unparalleled in the industry. No compromises.

i would stay away from helix, are you going for better quality, or sheer cheapness? out of the choices you listed i'd get full rnr because some of the hks catbacks arent 3inches all the way, and that is going to matter down the line.

Never.... but we would need to get down there early enough to allow the motor to cool a bit.
