What type of Manual Boost Controller?

Hey guys I was thinking about picking up a manual boost controller until I can save up for the Vishnu Stage 1+ next year. I'm heading back to college and naturally will be broke so I had a couple questions.

As far as the engine goes my car is pretty much stock...I do have a greddy type-s valve though. Would i be able to set the MBC to 19.5 psi and have to run the high all the way to redline without even coming close to putting the engine in danger? Would I have to get anything to re-map fuel or anything to that extent?

I never really looked into an MBC because I was planning on getting an EXEDE right away, but got RRE coilovers first. Anyways which brands are good and function reliably? Keep in mind that I will eventually probably get rid of it..so a $150 mbc really probably isn't in my best interest. Are there any brands to avoid entirely? Any other good suggestions? Thanks!

I think most people on the forums will agree that the Hallman is just about the best you can buy. I have one that i never ended up using because i also went with Vishnu, and I am selling it still brand new in the box if you're interested.

$100 brand new, im selling it for $80.

Yeah that is the impression I am getting. I was also considering the AMS boost controller......the Turbo XS ones seems a bit expensive

I have the Turbo XS and it's great. I do wish I would have bought an EBC though, so that I could easily change settings. I also wouldn't have to worry about my boost changing because of changes in the temperature.

Yeah I'm just doing it as a temporary thing. I really like the Vishnu system and would just like some extra power until I get around to buying it. Plus the boost drop off stock at redline drives me crazy.

I had the ams mbc & sold it. if you add any mbc, you'll want some kind of flash to fully take advantage of the extra power & to be on the safe side. Save your money & just get the xflash & you wont need to buy a mbc with that set-up.

In my experience, I find the MBC very usefull. I had an XFlash with just the "pill" that comes with the ECU. After speaking with Shiv about some boost issues I was having (high spike and not holding any substantial boost to redline) I got a cheap Joe-P MBC and installed it. I set it for 20.5lbs... I noticed a slight drop in low-mid range torque (I think it's due to the non-existant spike now) but the boost holds until redline and the top end pull is substantially better. I am going to the Dyno Day in Sept and I am considering bringing the pill with me and if I have the time do a comparo of the 2 setups I will.
