My clutch is gone after only 25K miles

Well, I've been thinking how my clutch had been holding up so well, etc..... Anyway, last night I went to the dragstrip and had some horribly bad ETs and TS's.
I was hoping for 12's and 110 mph or more but instead I got a bunch of high 13's and sub 105mph TS's

I had the car recently tuned and was really hoping for great numbers. I had already done a 13 flat @ 105 mph with a map that had a huge HP drop from 5Krpm to redline...... The tuner and other ppl were there and they thought my clutch might be the problem, I did not think so at the time, but today I went to the dyno to check the power and the clutch gave out in the first pull Obviously, it had been failing all along but I did not realize it. One night of launches and a couple of dyno pulls finished it off clutch.......

Anyway, I spoke with a fellow EVOist who had an EXEDY twin disk clutch for sale and I arranged to buy it from him. Now I need to make arrangements to get it installed.... No way to make any assessments of the state of tune with the car at this time.... No wonder my times and TS's sucked so bad.....

Oh yeah, I also failed to realize that the AEM was set up for launch control .... OK, OK, I'm not the sharpest ball in the rack, but in all honesty, I had no idea that feature was enabled. I thought my engine was coming apart when I tried to rev it up to launch . Anyway, after some frantic consultations with the tuner I actually tried using the right technique in my last run of the night, but by then it was too late and i suspect my clucht was all but fried anyway.....

The good news is that I will now have a nice new clutch... It's an ill wind that blows no one any good

OK, where do I go for the clutch installation? Who will do it?

Get someone who has installed one before. "DON'T" let someone install it that has never done one. I had a good Trans. shop install mine ( I Thougth) it took 2 weeks because he did not have a clue what he was doing on the Evo.

I can not prove it. But I think he installed the wrong fluid in my Transfer case / or not enough fluid, anyway my Transfercase went out approx. 100 later. grrrrrr

Leason learn, get someone thats done one before.

here are the time sheets... nothing to brag about
anyway, it was a slow night. I cannot remember which was which but among the cars that ran next to me were Mustang GTs, BMW M3, Ford Lighning Pickup, a Dodge Dart drag car, Civics, Tegs......

Good advise, thank a lot. I definitely want to make sure it's done right.....

Based on others' experience, 25K on the stock clutch isn't bad at all!

You are right... It's not unusual for EVO clutches to go bad in a short time. I have only run about (20) 1/4 mile runs and about the same number of dyno pulls... I do have a little more HP and TQ than a stock EVO... That could explain the early death of this clutch. Still, 25K miles is a very short lifespan for a clutch... I have not had to replace a clutch but in 4 vehicles in my entire life (I've owned well over 50 different cars & trucks). Except for 2 Chevy vans, a cursed Saab Sonnet and an equally cursed MG midget (the Prince of Darkness syndrome ) I've only had clutch problems with this car..... And never with a car so new....

Oh yeah, this could also explain why I've been having problems with my 1-2 shift...

I agree with EVO8LTW. YOu should be grateful it lasted that long. I only had 4 runs and my clutch is gone. 15K miles with BR 4 setup. The stock clutch was not holding.

Probem with 1-2 is common. Change tranny fluid and get the underhood bushing and you should be

If your racing at the drags then your lucky you got 25k out of it... and I have heard really good things about the exedy twin clutch so if you can get one for cheap or whatever then props to you but I highly recomend a professional shop who has worked on Evo's before.

Same one as lancershop is saling. After getting these and changing the tranny fluids 1-2 shift improved a lot. You might want to do a search as well. This topic have been discuss already.

Exedy twin should be a good clutch. I think the price of this clutch went up after the good impressions on the magazine. I went with ACT because of the budget $$$.

Looks like I lucked up here. The guys at Boost Solutions are going to do the install tomorrow. I'm getting an Exedy twin disk from a friend for $1200 so I should be OK by Wednesday..... I was thinking of buying that clutch and having it installed anyway.... I guess it all worked out pretty much as planned......

i am still on the stock clutch at 23K but I have NEVER dragged it. It has probably done about 20 dyno pulls, but that really isnt that much stress since there is no launching involved.

Good luck with it Silver

Yerah, those hard launches are clutch killers..... Still, I thought my clutch was doing pretty good until last Friday ...... Well, I'm getting a new clutch installed no matter what. I guess this will be A good thing to get the car sorted out better. Thanks for the good wishes
