Knocking engine sound?

Ok, I need to be completely sure about what the knocking sound sounds like.

I was idling this morning and I heard the engine pulsate but it was a lot rougher than usual.

It would pulsate then it made a sound like it's trying to suck in air, but very deep.

Almost like if someone was punching a foam covered bag... sorta muffled.

I know the knocking sound is a lot more sharper than this, but I just want to make sure.

Anyone got a sound clip of knocking?

Thanks.

How many miles are on the car? It could be the PCV valve making noise..

20,100 miles. I don't know. It just got me worried, since the sound happened continuously, one after another.

The sound of "knock" or "ping" is very similar to what it sounds like if you take 2 plastic Bic pens and tapped them against eachother. But a bit more metallic in practice, it's very close to the sound though, and you should be able to recognize it. It is unlikely that you would get ping at idle under vacuum.

Did it happen shortly after you started your car? Have you checked your oil level recently? How about the coolant level? I've heard all kinds of weird noises come from cars when the coolant level dropped a bit, although never to the point of overheating.
