I bought the specialty tool through a local Mac Tools guy. It was around 11 bucks. I have heard of people using the threaded metal bolts from the battery. However, I woiuld just invest in quality tools to do a cam job, so you don't run into any problems with the install.

Maybe a machine shop will have the threaded rod or maybe long bolts. Either that or try an "old fashioned" hardware store versus Home Depot or Lowes. I know our local hardware store stocks far more fasteners than the HD.

you stand a 50/50 chance of all-thread snapping off if you try and use it as a subistute for the tool. if you can find an actual steel bolt, that would be a better substitute. if the all-thread snaps, you'll have another couple hours of work just to get the piece out.
