new cams without new rocker arms?
new cams without new rocker arms?
I was always under the impression that whenever you change cams. That new rocker arms have to be used. There is a wear pattern between the cam and wipe area on the rocker. I cannot seem to find any thread where anybody changed the rockers when the cams were changed.
It this old school thinking?

Its best to install new rockers when using new cams, The two surfaces bed in together, and get happy with one another. You put a new cam in , and its like switching partners right in the middle of the act.
What it seems like though, is that most poeple are just putting in new cams with the old rockers, and not seeing any problem. I dont know if anyone has bothered to pull their valve cover back off afterwards and checked, but I am sure that there are more people that have not installed new rockers than those that have.
The best way, %100 correct, would be to use new rockers though

That is what I thought. I will bet this drives the price way up because rockers are or can be expensive. I would expect to see high wear metals in the oil and rapid wear on either the cam or rockers. without solid lifters I wonder if this dampens the effect? I guess we will have to wait and see. it can take 30k miles to find out.

The rocker arm appears to be about $16.00ea. ($15.84) @ www.mitsubishiparts.net

I would think that since we have roller rockers, it wouldn't be that critical to replace them. The cam journals, on the other hand, are critical since they wear together w/ the head so those can't be interchanged between two different heads.
I've probably done about 8 cam swaps where I just mixed and matched the rockers without any problems on DSMs.

I just had a rocker break in half. 32 miles on a freshly built motor. Haven't had a chance to get the head off. We did pull the valve cover to find a broken rocker and 2 others off. This motor was also in time during the time of the incident. It happened in cylinder 3. Anyone ever here of this happeneing. Jun 272 cams/supertech dual springs/supertech valves/freshened up and milled before going back on the car. Valve job ect.
Wow, old thread.. But yes, I had it happen on a cam install. The only thing I can say is that I (you too) must not have had the rockers down on the valves incorrectly. When I did mine, I finished the install and turned the motor by hand with the VC off to check for binding etc..spit the rockers off 2 intake valves --shot them rt out of the head. Dont know the real reason why, but on reinstallation everything was fine, dont know if it was clearence from bleeding the rockers or what that casued it--just that it happened and I too had never seen nor heard of it happening before.
I know this is old but I just installed cams and let the car warm up. Everything was fine for 5 min then the car started running rough then died. I pulled the valve cover and 4 rocker arms on the exh side were snapped in half. Was this from them not being seated properly? Could 1 breaking put stress on the others and those break? What other damage should I be looking for? This happened after free revving to 4500-5k and idling. Any other damage possible?
