Cam gears, and reference marks...was told to set them 1 tooth off when I install?
Well hey guys. I have recieved the AEM cam gears, but I have been told and read that some people install the cam gears actually one tooth off from TDC stock zero mark. I also read that vishnu gears are already made this way. Can anyone help any of the confusion before install tonight?
i talked to him about it, Andrew, but after thinking abut it...i dont think i fully understand...seems like it would be as easy as uninstalling stock 0' cams, and installing new cam gears in the same exact tooth on the belt also set at 0'
ok I just talked to andrew again, and im kind of picking up on it, but kind of getting lost at the same time. He tells me i need to set the AEM cam gears at -2 before I put them on, and then mark something. He said that the stock gears are off 5 degree's. I am sooo lost

what you are writing about applies for vishnu gears cuz they designed for for dsm's so they are a tooth off. But the vishnu gears have red marks to help install them correctly. If AEM designed their gears for Evo's then you don't have to worry about being a tooth off. Give AEM a call to make sure.

Try this if its not too late. Do 1 gear at a time.
as long as your 100% confident your stock gears are installed correctly. put the engine @ tdc compression, cyl 1. take a paint pen & mark the belt & gear @ 12 oclock. remove that gear lay it on the ground, now take your aem gear, put it at zero, now lay that gear on top of the stock gear & line up the dowel pin holes, hopefully the pulley teeth line up with the stock gear & aem gear, or very close. put a new paint mark on the aem gear tooth. The paint marks should be on similar teeth, relative to the stock gear dowel pin hole.
It's not exact, but you can tell if the stock gear is retarded or advanced to the aem gear @ "0".
At the very least, you will be able to put the aem gears on @ your stock gear timing regardless of what the timing marks say. Then go from there.
If you take 10 stock gears & line them up, I bet you will find 6 identical, 2 retarded & 2 advanced.
good luck.

I installed mine today...
1. set the engine at TDC
2. make sure cam gear marks align with marks on the valve cover
3. Mark belt with white grease pen at the gear alingment point.
4. zip tie belt to gears(pulleys)
5. Losen cam bolts(you need to hold the cam, use 1 1/16' open end)
6. Losen belt tension(just enough to slide pulley in and out)
7. cut zip tie and change one gear at the time. You will align the outer gear 0 mark on the gear with your white mark on the pulley. With Vshnu gears, I aligned the red dot with the belt mark
8. If you install the gears set at -5 you will have to move the cam -5 deg to align the dowel pin on the Gear and keeep you outer gear mark at 0 or at the red dot on the Vishnu gears!
9. hold cam and set bolt to 65ft/lbs
10. turn crank by hand 2 times to make all is clear.
I took out the sparkplugs, makes it easy to turn over the engine
