850R guy chime in I need you thought...
My AMS 37r recently blow up so with all the hype about the 850r I purchased one. Keep in mind my comments are based on my initial thoughts as I have not totally dialed in or dyno'd the 850r:
1. The compressor looked much smaller than the 37r (5mm) 2. At 82% duty cycle on my boost controller I would register 32-33 psi on the old P67 (37r). On the 850r running the same duty cycle I now get 23 psi. I am assuming this is due to the smaller compressor. 3. It appears in order to get to 39 PSI where I was running my old setup I would really have to push this turbo. 4. On my old setup 39 PSI equaled 85% duty cycle on the boost controller. I am sure in order to get 39 PSI from this turbo I would need to run 92-95% duty{OMG}. Now the questions and concerns: 1. How long will this turbo last pushing it at 95% duty? My 37r gave up running 85% for about 10 runs… 2. Is this turbo too small for my setup 2.0 with a drag manifold? In order to run 39 PSI (like old setup) I would have to push this puppy. 3. Am I better off going to a 6765 BB for my setup? PLEASE GIVE ME YOUR THOUGHT I WOULD LOVE TO HEAR FROM THOSE THAT RUN THE 850R. |
Boom is all I can say i killed like 3 of them and now I'm in the 950r with the affraid feeling of blowing it up in high boost.

sharkbite, everytime i hear about your car you are blowing up turbos, getting bigger ones, blowing those up. maybe time to give up with the 850 and 950s? look like such great turbos but they dont seem to last...damn

Not to be a smartass, but i think it may be time to step up to a 40r. They are much more durable.

Highway boost kill's them turbo's very fast. |
If you decide you want to go back to a 37r I'll trade for you 850

Damn, I didn't know these turbo's were like that? how are precisions turbo's for longevity? As we know honeywell(garett) are the best for ball bearing/ journal bearing?
are the ams series turbo's ball bearing?(i'm thinking not) There has got to be a reason these turbo's are failling, it is not normal at all to have sharkbite's unreliability |
You have a boost leak or some other problem going on..... This doesnt sound right at all. I have been running my 850R at 38-39psi everyday for a good 6-7K miles worth of daily driving. And once i go to a .82 back side i plan to run higher boost levels.
BTW I also do ALL my races on the highway to top of 4th gear... No failure yet. {thumbup} |
