STOCK evo threw flames...is this bad?

i know this is pretty cool but i'm slightly worried about it.

saturday night my stock evo (boost gauge only) blew flames out the exhaust TWICE, but not since then. here's what happened:

i left a restaurant and got on the highway, shifted high in the revs all the way up to about 80 MPH. I drove at about 80 for 2 miles and then begn to coast down... near 65 i shifted to 4th and continued to coast on the exit ramp. right around 50mph there was a very soft exhaust pop and the signs and trees behind me LIT UP. the one car behind me moved over quickly and passed me shaking his head.

My passengers and I debated whether it was the evo or not, so we tried it again... up to 60 and coasted to 45 with no repeat. Later that night i left my friend's place and managed to get it to happen again... same highway pass (in reverse) basically same cirumstances.

i have 2000 miles on the car and like i said, only a boost gauge. i've tried to do it again but havent been able to since that night

any ideas? is this a misfiring problem or just not having the cat warm enough?

thanks

that happens to me ALL the time, so i think u are fine.

reason for this is i think u are running rich and extra fuel dump out of the exhaust.

That rocks! Actually one time my wife and I were coming home from work, I was on like half throttle lightly accelerating and decelerating in traffic, then BOOM! I thought I hit some big rock or something because we felt it under the car. Sounds like similar circumstances, although it's only happened to me once since then. Wierd but awesome no less.

how far does this flame come out the pipe?
its not going to burn the car behind me is it?
and if it did would i be able to get mitsuibshi to pay for the damage the flame caused?

i dont think this is a serious flame... just a "pop" im going to have a friend follow me tomorrow night to try to videotape it...

i thought the purpose of a cat was to quench any oxygen and unburnt fuel as well. I know that the removal of oxygen prevents any flareups in the exhaust... i thought thats why any hot fuel mix burns when it hits the air. i dont know if this is a backfire though, or just an afterburn...

i dont know enough about it to do any more than speculate...

can anyone elighten me on this?

Who cares about the people behind you? If they are tailgaiting, let that be their punishment

Sweet. Time to break out the grill!

I have seen some videos of JDM EVO's having a fireball. (I think it was some Best Motoring video clip.) I heard JDM EVO's have no cat, so it may be a different reason for the fireball.

Please post a video if you are able to capture that moment!
