it really don't matter where you mount it, it works by a reflecting beam.

But if cop hits you on the lower bumper or headlight instead of near your windshield or windows and there are no other cars around you to reflect that beam, then you're screwed cause your radar detector wont work.

I like the jammer better. It'll confuse the detector, whether its laser or ka, k, x, etc.

Aren't all radar jammers banned in the U.S? Laser jammers aren't because lasers aren't managed by the FCC or whatever federal agency manages the bandwidth of radars.

Mounting high gives a distinct advantage. The advantage is when you crest a hill if your detector is mounted higher it will clear the hilltop faster than one mounted lower. Longer line of sight = better protection. Laser performance is also improved since light is more easily reflected from the hood when mounted low, the index of refraction waves from a hot engine probably also play games when mounted low.

I have a V1 and now a laser jammer (escort zr3). Before I got my jammer I was ticketed by a cop using laser. I have my V1 mounted top left of the front window. It didn’t even make a peep. I chatted to the cop about what he was using and about my V1. He claims that he aimed at my front plate. About 30 minutes later I drove the same road again, this time at the speed limit. I saw the cop again and this time the V1 went off, detecting laser. As I dove by, the cop waved at me. I can only assume that he aimed the laser at my detector the second time.

lasers are always aimed at the front license plate or your headlights. it needs a fairly perpendicular surface to bounce back from. Cops should not be aiming the laser at your windshield.

detectors are only illegal in DC and VA.

I got pulled over by a VA cop for speeding and having the detector plugged in.

I would of argued for a while, but she was pretty hot, so I just kept trying to talk to her, flirting and so on. Maybe get more lucky than just getting away with a ticket.

I have a escort 8500 x50 and I have been somewhat disappointed. I did all the research and read all the articles and while the V1 is probably the most reliable and effective radar on the market, it's also the most expensive.

I bought this thinking it was second best along with the bel rx65. I find that I get a lot of falser alerts from anything like traffic lights to automatic entrances to stores. I do think they're useful and they've saved me on a couple of occasions but I don't think that the range on these things is as quoted on paper.

In other words don't count on being able to drive recklessly and have that 2+ mile buffer to slow down because the radar's range.

In terms of laser there are laser jammers that supposedly work quite well against lasers and because of no regulation on laser wavelengths, they are legal. Although if you're going fast enough, a cop might still pull you over anyhow even though his gun won't register a speed. Unfortunately laser jammers are quite expensive, even more so than V1s.

The Escort ZR3 has a little remote mount switch that allows you to quickly disable jamming once you have managed to drop your speed (if necessary). This, hopefully, will stop the cop from pulling you over because his gun didn't register. I agree that they are expensive, but it has already saved me from 1 ticket and that has more than compensated for the expense.

Has anyone tried the license plate shim trick for lasers? I read a while back that shimming your plates with some spacers such that a reflected beam wouldn't bounce away from your vehicle but to the ground helps. I've also read that scuffing plates reduces their reflectivity.

i dunno about that, maybe for city cops that are waiting behind a bush to get you, but highway patroll seem to always drive with their radar on, and that's when a radar detector will save you.
most of the SF bay area is so "dirty" that the radar detector is useless from false alarms. That kind of makes it safer for you because the cops can't use traditional radar. I would expect them in this case to use lidar ??? (laser based speed guns) in this case.

I drive Rt17 from Santa cruz everyday, all the cops use Instant on there. All you gotta do is watch for the brake lights ahead of you.

Driving slower is the safest bet.... (something I have to do better....)

I would have to agree with ChrisW ... the whole "speeding is bad, therefore you need a ticket weither I'm right or wrong" thing is the real issue ... and for that matter I know of plenty of cops that make numbers 'up' in order to issue a ticket. For that matter ... a ticket for me, would be a good call to give me a heads up about an area that is perhaps a real dangerous spot.

The whole part I don't agree with from there, is that a ticket can put point on your record, and 'raise' your 'private' insurance rates regardless of weither the cop was right or wrong.

As for me, I've really had to learn, where, why, and how to speed / not to speed.

What's funny is my speedo on my sportbike went out, and since then I've been a 'better' driver, because I ALWAYS flow with traffic, and I'm ALWAYS aware of the situations around me ... hmmmmmmmmmmmmm federal mandated HUDs anyone?

jcnel.

The'll probably give you every ticket in the book and then make up some. Don't forget that cops can write as many tickets as they like. it's up to the court to disregard it. For example; They can say that a speck of dirt is obscuring your plate and write you a ticket. Then you have to go to court to prove that there was nothing obscuring!, my best advice is when you go to court, you take in any type of evidence, pictures, video(with your own player, cause they will chrge you to use their equipment). If you have evidence and the state doesn't, then you have a better chance of getting off. I haven't had a ticket stick in over 5 years (knock on wood), but it was only after learning how to deal with the court system after 2 many b.s. tickets!
Also for some reason, I found out that cops hate racing stickers!!!, vinyl stickers just make you stick out to cops so you should avoid them.
