Thinking of getting a Radar detector.

I dont know a whole lot about them, ive been searching for like 30 min or so but have some questions. Do police cars have a pulse that they read off and then the detectors find it and aleart you. So would it work if there like going the oposite direction in the streat and when they get closer it beaps? Or does it only work of they have the laser on and there trying to clock speaders? If its the last one then what is the point of these devices? Any help will help alot

Try to look up Escort Passport 8500 and Valentine 1, those are really good.

The most difficult thing to detect is the "instant on" radar or the Laser. By the time you detect either of those, you've already been clocked. The best tactic is to have a sensitive detector that detects the "instant-on" radar when the drivers ahead of you are getting clocked. For radar, there is not a whole hell of a lot you can do... They make some laser diffusers (jammers?) but I don't know how well they work.
There are some really good radar detectors out there.
The V1 is supposed to be very good but I think there are several others just as good and in some respects better. The Escort Passport 8500 is one of them (I've got that one). However, I've read that there are some just as good but lots less expensive.
I think the V1 and the Passport are among the most expensive. The V1 will set you back enough to buy 3 good detectors, the Passport will cost you 2 good detectors. It's up to you which to get. There are some good reviews if you do a web search.

Radar detectors are just that -- detectors. The cop has to be using his gun for you to detect him. Unfortunately there is a feature on must radar guns called "instant on" which allows a cop to only use when he thinks someone is speeding -- this is very hard to avoid as it is hard to detect. Fortunately most cops are lazy and will leave the gun on and you will be warned about them and have time to slow down.

Laser is a different beast. It is point and shoot for the cop. They sight you, pull the trigger and get your speed. It is also nearly impossible to detect.
There are, however, some downsides to laser.
1) The cop needs to be stationary and hence cannot get you while he is driving.
2) It does not work in bad weather or in any conditions that will scatter the laser beam.
3) It is somewhat unusual as only 5% to 10% of guns are laser. That being said, may last ticket came from laser.

I have since installed a Escort ZR3 Laser Shifter

Good Luck.

I was thinking of getting one and hard wiring it to the dome lights, then mounting it just above the rearview mirror. Anyone tried this setup??

Our radar is a dash mounted unit that only transmits when you tell it to. I see a car moving fast, I check it, then pull it over. The only thing it would really help is if I was transmitting at someone else, and you detected it.

Now alot of police use laser that is not picked up by radar detectors, and is more target specific. If I pull someone over and they have a radar detector, they get the speeding ticket always. Then I ask them if their radar detector did them alot of good.

You can be pulled over from just an observation, the neumber is not really needed. you can be paced, they can use the plane, laser, many different things. If a cop see you speeding and does not get a number, he could still write a C&I which is worse in our state.

I wanted one (years ago) until I found out how really useless they are.

I used to have one... Like Sano says, they are basically usesless. All they are good for is to know when to pull over

that said, the best radar protection is a CB radio, stay alert, pay attention to what's going on in front of you.

The first thing I bought for my evo was a Valentine 1 w/ the remote display unit, that was a year ago.

(knock on wood) It has saved me numerous times and have not been pulled over in the past year. Nothing beats knowing which direction the signal is coming from, which types of signals they are, how many signals and the strength of the signals in one unit.

You can hardwire it up easily too. No need to run sloppy cords around!

not fool proof but certainly not useless. It definitely helps when other people are driving around you especially. They need to come out with a radar jammer that always returns the speed limit lol. I know they are illegal but if it could return a realistic number who would know the difference anyway :P
