rain/snow driving
rain/snow driving
please dont comment unless you are really sure of the answer, because I know a lot of people have probably been misinformed or have their own opinions. anyways, what would be better in rain and in snow. front wheel drive with all season radials, or all wheel drive with our advan ultra high performance summer tires? obviously the fwd would have less advantage than the awd in that sense, but are the advans so bad in the snow and rain that the fwd would be better with all seasons?
For any snow, or rain in temps under about 45 F, I would go with a FWD with all seasons over an AWD on Advans any day of the week and twice on Sunday!
I have a set of Blizzak's getting ready to go on the EVO first week in Nov.

Advans are a strictly high performance tire meant to be used in the spring/summer so your question is pretty much irrelevant
summer tires are bad news in the winter
heck, even all season radials
Ive tried them all(I dont own an EVO...yet) but I have a prelude(FWD)
I tried summer tires just for the hell of it....didnt get out of my driveway
I tried all seasons...not that much better but I was still sliding all over the place
I tried winter tires....DING DING DING...we have a winner
traction with my Blizzaks in the snow is great
so to answer your question, put on tires that are suited and designed for the season

i have about 7k on my stock advans, they have only let me down twice, both times it was mostly driver error, in the rain, i wasnt sure how hard to brake before a corner, and i was flying, and got into the sitution of braking in the apex, with wet tarmac. not a big deal though, the car starts to slide but is easily controlled. the advans did better/do better than people say they do, i drive in the rain almost daily, havent had a problem. most people switch not because of the tires ability, but more because the advans are so good on dry pavement that it is a shame to use them in the wet, when you could find better handling tires for half the money.
Advan's are not worth it in the snow as they are summer tires it has alot to do with the Compound of the tire, the width and so on and so on.
The wider the tires the more the cars weight is spread out on those tires (think of snow shoes, they spread your weight out to keep you on top of the snow), well the same happens with wide car tires, in both Snow and rain. (hence Hydroplaning or Aquaplaning which ever term you prefer).
Winter time in snow try some narrower rims and tires, yeah it would look rediculous and you'll get people laughing at your ride but with the AWD I guarantee you'll smoke most things out there and have the last laugh.
anything less than 185 wide and you'll be looking good.
For the Hell of it, go ahead and use the doughnut rim X4 and you'll see/feel the difference.
And before anybody says what the hell do I know Samdiver74 lives in Florida, yeah your right but I used to live in the UK before I moved over here, and I had no end of fun in the winter time with all my pals, certainly taught me a lot.

I bought a set of BFG kdws for a cross country trip this winter. They suck on dry road compared to the Advans but did really well in the heavy wet stuff. Dont have much snow near the beach here so Im not sure how the snow thing will work out...........
I would take the AWD with the Advan tires for sure....
I took my Evo out (stock tires) in the snow and ice several times and it was slippery but I had much more control than most people on the road I don't know why people biatch about the advan tires in the snow so much they aren't the greatest but they aren't that bad
I used to drive a GSR Integra (FWD of course) and had all season tires on it and it sucked big time in the snow. more than 2 inches and the car was useless altogether.
AWD > * in the snow yes tires make a big difference but I know from experience that even with advan tires the Evo does WAY better in the snow that FWD

Summer Tires are better in the Rain than All-Season Tires. Yes this is TRUE. All-seasons are trying to do to many things at once. like Mc Donalds, Go to tirerack.com and you can find this information. Just do not attempt to use a Summer tire in the SNOW.
