just got my EVO MR, need break in advise
Hi,
I got my car 2 days ago and I am not to sure of what should I do to properly break in the engine. The car has 170 miles right now, any suggestions?
Before I forget, it is a 05 EVO MR with the newer turbo upgrade.
Thanks!!

If it were my MR, I would install a turbo timer straight away and dump the factory synthetic for non–synthetic for the first 2000 miles. Keep it under 3000RPM for the first 1000 and under 4000RPM for the second 1000. Switch back to Mobil-1 after 2000 miles and keep it under 5000RPM until 5000 miles. Run it to redline after 5000 miles.

You should drive it like you stole it break in! It's the best! Redline it before you hit 1000 miles and you should be good to go! Ok on a serious note, change the oil after 1000 miles. I'd be shifting at 4K and nothing above that. You have to also break in the turbo baby! Don't be afraid to shift above 3K. Once it's finally broken in, enjoy the splendor of what we EVO FREAK's call BOOSTFIENDISM! Muahahhahaha
i'd do exactly what monstar evo said drive it like you stole you i've heard that these run awesome not when driven to the extreme but not baby'd either, oil change is crucial though. I know that when i finally get mine i will drive it hard right out of the lot.
Thanks guys,
I know for a fact that the car was taken to almost the red line already on one of the test drives. Further more I personally drove it a couple of time in different gear to about 6k rpm .
This is what is gets me confused, some poeple tell me to never drive the car at the same rpm, ie, drive your car for long trips during your break in at the same rpm.
Friend of mine also suggested to keep the rpms up and down, shift up and down and never leve it at the same RPM.
I would assume that this engines in todays advance world came "ready to go".
Changing the subject, someone mentioned something about the turbo. If I am not mistaken, the 05's are able to get more power by a redesign turbo housing andbigger flapper along with more boost resulting ina increase of 13pounds of torque at lower rpm... that's what I know.
By the way, the manual says full synthetic Mobil one
Thanks!!

Look just break her in like the book wants and you will be fine, I have broke in several cars two being evos and my own personal "MR" im working on now.
believe me, I wrote a lot before and lost it all...(I went over this for a long time with a lot fo people and was on course to use mineral oil when I found out about the additives in the oil from the factory) but here's the scoop:
Break in with the original oil in there...there is an additive from the factory for break in. The rings seat almost immediately in today's engines...almost when the engine fires up. (source: Saad from Intense Motorsports, Jason Siebels from AEM agrees) You need to still take it fairly easy for ~100 miles, then don't rev really high (over 4000) for a couple more hundred miles (bearings need break in and can get eccentric if you stress them too early). You should break in a performance engine hard to get best performance out of it. This is well established...what exactly that means, nobody really knows but don't go crazy until you have 1-2 K on the car (you can hurt the bearings). Everything else has to be broken in easy as possible (brakes, clutch, drivetrain). Good luck. PM me if you really want to know all the damn detail behind all of this stuff. I really did go nuts on this and pretty much found out all the theories and answers so PM me if you want to know why and what all my sources are.

ill say take it easy until the 1k mile mark. the reason why i say that because my friend took his wrx and force it to break in by going to the track and high rev, etc.. next thing you know the engine had an oil leak and some little problems that the dealer fix. but i run my evo slow until my first oil change and after that i beat it to the ground and had no problem so far.but thats my 2cents.
I tried to keep it under 4000 rpm for the first 720 miles, which is when I arrived at Spring Mtn. Raceway in Nevada. Then I constantly redlined it for two days on the racertack. I also changed the synthetic oil with Mobil 1 syn 10W/30 at 300 miles, just before I left home in L.A. to drive to the track.
All the power is from 4000 rpm to the redline, when the turbo is well spooled up.
