Why no Evos in Pro Drag Racing????

I was wondering why there are no Evos in professional drag racing? Come to think of it, there are no WRX/STis either. Granted there are more Evos in 9,s and 10's than Subarus. Everytime I watch NOPI racing on Tunervision and the NHRA Sport Compact Series, I always hope there will be Evos and WRXs. There are none. I think Al from Pruven and Jeff from Turbo Trix should enter those. They are quick enough. The closest I have seen to a DSM is John Sheppard's Talon in the Street Class. I have seen Brent Rau, but his Eclipse was converted to RWD. And these were in NOPI. None in NHRA. Not to disrespect Hondas, but that is all they show. There may be a Mazda or Toyota here and there.

Possible reason I can think of:

1) EVO is a little too rare in comparison to Subbies and Hondas to be seen in competitive drag racing. Most EVOs will be seen in types of road racing.

2) Rules of the sanctioning bodies may be limiting to the EVOs and like cars and make it senseless to try and compete with regards to HP/weight ratios, etc. Remember, the fastest EVO in the country runs mid-high 9's. How will that be competitive with the 8 second Hondas? You'd have to read the rulebooks to find out.

No it's not. It might have tags from when bought new but when inspection/emmisions time comes it won't be. Also, those times weren't run on DOT legal tires, etc, etc, etc. Just like Al's 10.6 EVO won't pass inspection. Streetable doesn't equal legal.

True, I am sure if someone tubbed out an Evo to a full race car, it could run 8's or 7's.

They could make an AWD class. Or enter in Street class. Street class cars run 9's or less.

There isn't enough cars to justify creating a new class. They are not going to pay the winnings to a 2 round race. It's not economically justifiable.

I remember seeing some AWD talon on the show running somewhere in the 7's or 8's...and I read in a magazine that the ESX crew is going to be racing a subie for 05 as well, so time will tell if an evo body will be used...

Well its a good question, however most agree the Evo was never meant to be a drag car. It is us crazy americans that turn it into one

Even amongst DSM'ers who don't want to admit it, in pro drag racing, RWD is the most efficient way of hauling down the track into to 7 sec territory. AWD DSMs to 911's in PR all suffer from broken tranny parts . . . they are never steady enough to place in the top 3 in most events. Before arrogance takes over, the Evo will suffer the same fate as other AWD, unless eliminating it completely to be as AWD.

Why do you think the +200 mph celica and other slew of toyota engined hybrid cars went RWD?

Also, why do you think there are slew of H&A running in pro drag racing? Lisa Kubo was average in her H-product in the late 90's. Once GM took her under their wings, she has basically beaten the pants of her competitors.

One of the problems is tires. Shep's DSM runs in the Street tire class and Brent Rau is in Outlaw RWD on slicks. A 2wd car, whether it be a PRO FWD Honda or a PRO RWD Supra powered Solara can take advantage of big set of slicks because they can heat them up. An AWD can't do it as well, or will cause too much stress on the drivetrain, and there really isn't a PRO AWD class to begin with. I know there are plenty of cars that can do AWD burnouts, but I'm thinking that unless there is some significant breakthrough in drivetrain technology or tire technology, there won't be any AWD cars siginificantly faster then the current 8s DSM's and WRX's (and that high 7 second Skyline from Japan) that can go toe toe with 6 second (and 5, 4 and 3s) tubbed, rail or funny RWD vehicles.
