I was talking to a friend of mine today. He's a pilot and said that as of about a month ago, 100 octane aviation fuel has gone unleaded and costs about $3.10 a gallon at some of the airports in Southern California.

He questioned whether or not the formulation is the same as the VP race gas we can get for automobiles.

Does anyone know if it is and can we use it for our cars?

Has anyone used it?

Can you just drive up to the pumps at the airports and put it in your car?

as far as i know you cant jsut drive up to a pump and fill up. The nozzles wont fit in a car so you have to use a gas can. All the ones i have been to are like that. Buts thats wa, i dont know if the nozzles are diff. in cali

also those aviation fuel will wear rubber gaskets out quickly... and i know pump gas has other additives that may not be in aviation fuel...

my friend's dad who is a mechanic said it was ok if you add very small amounts like 2 cups. In fact he told me to try it out if I could ever get my hands on some.

There's a small airport by my house that has 101 octane "low lead" gas that is supplied by chevron...

If you go there late at night when no one is around you are able to drive right out onto the flight strip, ground your car, and fill up using your debit card. The only scary thing is only holding the gas pump leaver at like 25% because it comes out VERY fast.

It is only costing 2.65 or so right now which is cheap!!! No one seems to mind filling up as long as it's at night and no planes are taking off lol...

I dont' think it's effected anything but I've heard running too much of this particular gas will kill the O2 sensors.

All aviation fuel nozzles are shaped according to the fuel type. I believe this is an FAA regulation to avoid confusion.

yes, you can use it, but if you are using the 100LL(LowLead) it will ruin your o2 sensors. If you are catless it is ok. The Aviation fuels are color coded. A blue die is added to the 100LL. Red is for 80 octane, I think 130/145 octane is purple. But whatever you do stay away from CLEAR. That is Jet-A(ie Kerosene/diesel). And no, It wont make your car as fast as a Jet.
There is also a 100 octane that doesnt have Lead and I believe it is Green died. That would be the best one but it is not all that common. Although the 130/145 would rock but I have never seen it available. The most common one is the 100LL. It is everywhere because the small amount of lead helps clear carbon deposits from the cylinders of aircraft engines.
At some of the airports that Ive been to they actually sell AVGAS to the public for race cars. But they also want you to have a container to put it in. I would call you local SMALL airport and talk to them. You can also find prices and phone numbers here.... http://www.airnav.com/fuel/
Just type in the name of your town and pick from the list. NOTE...some places may charge a little extra for non-aviation related purchases. I believe there is also an aviation tax added into their prices or added ontop. If you wanna haggle with them some places may discount that if its used on the street. I wouldnt push too hard because you are not paying highway tax though.

BTW I am a pilot and I havent heard of the fact that all fuels are going unleaded. He may be talking about GREEN....

hehe ya, I don't like going ot the airport. It's scary and it's low lead which I think effected my old car's O2 sensors... Saad Saad (intense motorspots 9 sec supra) owns two mobile stations out here that both sell 101 trick performance unleaded but it's 4.50 a gallon!!!!

He definately said it was unleaded 100 octane. I just want to make sure it has the same effect on my engine that the VP does before I try it, so that's why I'm curious if there would be any side effects to using it.

I'm close to one of the airports so it wouldn't be a big deal getting the gas. The other station in my neighborhood wants $6 plus per gallon for 100 octane.

If this is the Green fuel, will the nozzel fit into my tank?

i believe the green fuel is actually 100/130. It probably wont fit directly into your tank. but just take a funnel and take your time because it will come out real quick. But it all depends on the nozzel that they have. It may fit, and it may not come out too quick. Like I said I havent seen the 100 no lead many places so the nozzel may be smaller than the 100LL. It is bigger because of that reason...same as diesel nozzel is bigger so you CANT put the wrong fuel in you car unless you really work at it. But for sure if it is no lead then you wont have any problems. it is just higher octane. And BTW avgas normally has better quality control than car fuel, so it should be better for the health of you car in the long run....just a guess though.

You guys are playing russian roulette trying out all these different type fuels in your $30k+ cars. I know that you are chomping at the bit wanting higher octane fuels, but this seems a little destructive.

Automotive fuels are engineered for cars. Avaition fuels are engineered for airplanes. Sure they are both internal combustion engines, but there are huge differences.

Some people on this board are well researched in fuel types and such...and if you want to try different fuels, hey it's your car. BUT if you don't KNOW for SURE that the fuel has been extensively tested in passenger cars...I would NOT put it into the gastank of your car.

I am just waiting for the thread: "I put XXX fuel in my car and blew it up...now what?"

You could just install a "Mr Fusion" on your car to help deliver the 1.21 jiggawatts needed to run 10's!!!

Sweet! Thanks for the info AUSS1E. I used the link you posted to find out exactly where the gas station was at the local airport. Those pumps are kind weird, but cool. And you're right, that gas does come out fast! I brought a gas can since you said the pump nozzle was too big. At the airport I went to they wouldn't let me drive up to the pump anyway.

I got 5 gallons of the 100LL from Chevron for $13.75. I remember last time I got 5 gallons of race gas, it was almost $30!
