got question on octane levels

I live in Taiwan and we get 98 octane here. But my only concern is how do I know it is really 98 octane? My friend told me that the gas here is crap so its really only about 87 octane, wtf? Is there a way I can see if it is really 98 octane that I am getting?

There are two octane numbers, Research Octane and Motor Octane. The research number is usually about 10 higher than the motor, so they are usually averaged in the states.

(98+88)/2=93 octane in the USA (well, most of it, anyway)

Absolutly correct! So your 98 octane fuel in Taiwan is about the same as our 93 octane fuel in the US.

True, 98 there is about 93 here. But I don't think his question is answered yet. I think he wants to know if there is a way to test the octane of the gas he is buying. I don't know how to do that. Bump for ya. Good luck.

man, i am living in the bay area of California. The highest octane rating i see is 91... which is totally not right for my EVO. I don't know where to find gas stations that have higher octane rating. HELP!!!

R+M/2=US octane.
don't feel bad here in hawaii we only do 92. and the govorner wants to add methanol to our gas so we would be the same as you! 91!, i add 3 gallons of 100 octane to make it about 93.5 octane (14 gallons total in tank), but 100 octane is about $6.00 here. gets kinda expensive to keep blending your own fuel.

anyway about 1/4 100 and 3/4 92 will get the same result an about 93.5.
if you use vp racing 103 octane i think the formula is about 1/6 103 and 5/6 92 to make about 93.7 octane.

CL Bryant in the Bay Area will deliver a 54 gal. drum of VP100 (or any other race gas) to your home or business.
Comes out to "only" a little bit over $4.00/gal as opposed to $4.50 at the pump and is a little more convienient.

Redwood City, CA - 76 on Woodside Rd has 100 octane at the pump. Look for the pump with blue handle. Last time I got some it was $4.29 a gallon.

here in hawaii we have one station , 76 on king street that sells 100 octane on the pump. check your 76 stations, they will probably know which ones sell 100. they might have to use a small can or something, if its not on their pump.

Question

Cool...!

I just did a search for octane.. and i came across something called "xylene or toulene" (octane booster) is it the same thing as mixing the 100 octane racing fuel w/ the 91 octane?

I mean there are 2 ways to reach the same goal of 93.5 octane gas??

i am just confused...

You can mix the toulene to reach the desired octane levels. I decided to find race gas around, and I buy about 10 gal of 104 unleaded at a time (as I'm a bit hesitant to mix something from a paint company into my gas tank...although I know it is mixed into many different gasolines.) I can then stick a couple gallons in per tank to mix with the 91 we have here in CO to get a decent octane. Car runs much better if you can get it around 93-95 octane than it does on 91. Just my .02, I prefer to keep gas in the tank than other stuff...but toulene seems to be fine from the feedback I've seen.

Ok - I currently live in Cincinnati Ohio where I can get 94 octane but am debating on moving to Los Angeles (Redondo beach to be exact). I have been there several ties and have only seen 91 octane. I have not seen a 76 station that sells race gas. Does anyone know of a station in or near Redondo Beach CA that sells race gas?

I currently have a 94 octane Dynoflash and don't really want to get it reflashed to 91 octane and lose HP but have not found any place to buy race gas in the area.

Don't mean to hijack this thread...so I am also asking the original question....is there a way to test gas to verify the octane level you are actually getting????

thanks,
-Doug
