Wow, thanks for the responses guys!

To address some of your inquires:
- the rookie cop said he gave me a break by writing in 80 instead of 81 which would of qualified as reckless
- my radar detector is Cobra 9700, a piece of crap - it did nothing!
- I drove from Baltimore to Atlanta and let just say my body or my companion did not appreciate the rock and rolling of the stiff Evo suspension, we got physically tired really quickly!
- so my follow-up question is then, if I don't fight and pay the fines what about the effect of points on insurance? How many can I expect for 80 on 65? Won't contesting at VA court on basis of clean record reduce the penalty or the points?
- I'll be contacting my legal group that I belong to...

VA Sux! I saw at least dozen cruisers out in nowhere up in the Blue Ridge Mountains!!!

A lot of detectors out there that claim to be invisble to VG-2 don't live up to that claim. However, the Valentine 1 is not susceptible to VG-2. I use mine daily

I am not sure where you live in Maryland, but if you are close enough to the jurisidiction where you got the ticket, you might as well fight it. They wont throw out the radar detector ticket, that part is your fault for not comprehending any of the million signs they have in Virigina for no radar detector. With that said, I have fought three tickets in VA and had every one of them reduced or dropped so its worthwhile to try.

I'm in AA county in MD and the VA jurisdiction is about 6hrs away.

So, when they dropped or reduced your ticket were you in similar situation as I am now?

I also had 99 GST Spyder - very fun cars!!!

Too many hicks with no other income. Pay the ticket and forget it. It is out of state and, if like most places, will not show up on your local record. Here in Tx your driving record is handled by the TXDOT. If anyone wants it they have to pay. Insurance companies from out of state do not want the expense and usually will not ask for them, especially if you have not had a claim. You should also check out http://www.motorists.org for some info on fighting tickets etc.

If you want to do anything, write a letter to the papers and the VA tourism board complaining. Find every tourist web site and post (don't tell them you drive a red car). This probably won't do much but might ease your mind.

You should find out if the ticket will transfer. I have never actually found that out, I just have a general rule that I contest all speeding tickets (and im a lawyer, so thats kinda what we do). If it transfers to maryland, i'd fight the speeding ticket, if not, then I would just pay it and save the 12 hour round trip.

By the way, I like my Spyder, but Mitsu could have done a better job with the motors for the top. Ive had too many problems with them. I have a feeling my evo will be my last mitsubishi for a long while.

VA cops **** me off. When I was here last year (August-September, 2003), I was "threatened" with multiple tickets while in VA Beach in my Evo. We were hanging out at the Dairy Queen on Atlantic Highway....Bought stuff from DQ, so we were paying customers. A group of streetbikes was pulling in and out of the parking lot, revving up their motors and crap, trying to intimidate us. A 'Beach cop comes by on a bike...like 3 of them roll in within 5 mintues. They tell us we need to leave, because we were causing a scene. I ask him if they would rather harass us than go catch the people who are REALLY causing the scene, then I hold up my tasty Butterfinger Blizzard like I am proposing a toast.

He said "you can leave, or I can write you some ticket for all of the illegal crap you have on your car."

"Officer, you shouldn't say that. Profanity isn't allowed on the VA Beach boardwalk (true law here)."

He turns to my car and starts saying things like "Illegal exhaust. Illegal tail lights. Illegal wing."

I interjected with words like "Stock. Stock. Stock."

He looked back at me like I was kidding. I asked him if he wanted to see the owners manual, or perhaps some Mitsubishi promotional literature. Then they got a call on the radio. As they were all leaving, he looked at me and said "stay out of trouble".....

Ok, guy. I'll do that. Thanks for being a tool.

I can understand the good intentions of the city by trying to clean up and get away from the street racer crap....But seriously....

thx
I'll give you some advice... don't tell the judge that other cars behind you were speeding and that you were "profiled" because... you just admitted you were speeding. You will be found guilty quicker than you can complain and the judge will probably give you max fine, and is off to the next case. Why would you have a radar detector if you don't plan on speeding? Just think of the 100's in your same boat that have tried that excuse... the courts don't stay open unless people are found guilty. They want the $ and they will get it. Your best defense is to plea for a supervision charge or small fine. Good luck

Hey, when I've done nothing wrong and they talk down to me, I'm not going to stand there and take it like a chump.

Oh, and I had my GSR at the time. I just got the RS like a month ago.
