New EVO owner needing opinions :)

I am picking up my 05 Evo this coming week. Just wondering what should be my frist upgrades? I was thinking turbo timer...boost controller, bov and gauges. I am new to the EVO stuff and this is my new adventure. Just want to get opinions and see whats the best route to start with. I will keep stock turbo for 2-3 years.

full turboback w/ either a test pipe or high flow cat,ebc,s-afc,and gauges is a good start.then a turbotimer just in case you dont want to wait for the cooldown.

First thing....BOOST GAUGE! All other mods come next. You want/need/have to know what your turbo is doing.

Congrats on getting an EVO soon. The anticipation must be killing you.

Get your basic bolt-ons out of the way before you start to play with the ecu. A mbc shoud be in your future AFTER the boost gauge, EGT, and oil pressure. You can go with an EBC and a fuel computer, but your gonna have to retune every time you bolt on another part.

Apex-i and HKS are quite popular piggy-back computers, but wait til the bpu's are done.

oil temp gauge (so you know when the car is warmed up), boost gauge first off.

For quick gains: mbc, walbro fuel pump, flash/tune, 30-40 whp
For showoff/sound: turboback, open cone intake, bov

As someone else said, get a boost gauge first. YOU DO NOT NEED EGT, oil temp gauges. They are not needed. While an EGT is good to have, its not necessary, as is any other gauge except boost. I am sure other's will disagree, but unless you are tracking your car for 3 hours a day, then they are essential.

Id go this route:
Boost gauge
BOV
Turbo Back Exhaust
MBC
Fuel Pump

(get the aps like you said (i have it and it is great) stocker leaks, sorry, but it does.)

kinda disagree with this. Considering an exhaust at 80 mphs took my before exhaust mod from the torque curve of, 170wtq to 230wtq and added 27whp.

well here are my thoughts. This is also the route i took more or less.

Being that I really like the way it looks i went ahead and took the small evolution lancer badge off of my car the first day i got it and installed the Evolution VIII UK Badge......but in reality

First off comes your guages, not sure what setup you are looking for here but i recommend the Craig Hardy Panel that is being sold at Gruppe-S.com it is a perfect fit for the evo and makes it look clean. as to the guages i would go with Boost (obvisously) EGT lets you really check the temp your gasses are coming out at, and Oil Pressure. Installation of a MBC (manual boost controller) would be recomended at this time

I like to hear the bov so i changed to an open element filter the HKS Racing suction kit which proved to be great for me and went with the Greddy Type S Bov (doing the mod that everyone here on evom talks about...remoiving the smaller spring) However I will warn you the HKS Racing suction kit makes a lot of noise not sure if you like that or not.

Also VERY IMPORTANT MOD that you should do first is getting a stainless steel clutch line its like 20 bucks and the dealership will install it for you for about 50 bucks but this will save your clutch. i learned the hard way and now am the owner of an HKS twin plate clutch but its a bit of overkill.

Then comes a little bit of show/decent uprgrade....get yourself a full 3" exhaust with a test pipe (if you dont care about legality) or a high flow cat (if you do) you get the downpipe and the catback and whichever you decide on (high flow cat/ test pipe)

also you should install a upgraded fuel pump at this point

At this point is when i first got my ecu reflashed to handle these mods and it made my car run way better.

well this is a decent start, if you want any other ideas or even simple visual mods that add a bit to the evo let me know

I retract my statement. As I meant catback. You're correct a full 3" turboback will give very good gains. However, a good turboback can also easily run $800-1000.

However, I still feel that an oil gauge is a very good investment. Most people do not actually know when their car is properly warmed up. They tend to go by the coolant temp which is a huge mistake. In 50-60 degree weather it takes a good 10-15 minutes of city driving for my car to fully warm up (65-70 degree celcius oil temp). I drive very conservatively until my car is warmed.

I do agree with you. What i normally do is and i believe its a guideline for any high peformance car is, let the car warm up until it his above the c line on the engine temp. Drive the car for like you said, 10-15 minutes, not hitting much if any boost.
