newby question(opinions)

Well, I recently bought the evo 8 but I cant seem to accept the fact that I have euro tail lights. Is there anything i could do to get rid of these tail lights besides buying jdm mr ones? I heard that some people spray paint them with transparent red paint. has any one done this to their car? thanx in advance.

i did, went to michaels, bought transparent candy apple red, drove home, taped the signals, did two coats. make sure you clean them good b4 you paint them. I also tried the red vinyl but the air bubbles was a huge hassle.

There are a number of things that can be done, all of which have been explored by members of the Evo community. The Altezza-style clear tail lights are a lightning rod of controversy, with the general consensus that they look ridiculous on some color Evos (white, silver, blue, yellow), and not too bad on others (red, black). What you can do:

1. Replace the tail lights with JDM units. Expensive ($300 to $400) but very simple. A number of vendors carry them. I got mine from Z1 Auto Performance on a group buy earlier this year.

2. Pry your existing Altezzas apart, paint the inside, and reglue them. Inexpensive, but complicated and relatively difficult to do correctly. Do a search here for detailed instructions.

3. Paint the outside of the Altezzas with clear read spray paint available at most auto supply stores. Inexpensive, but a little rough looking. Getting a nice smooth coat of paint on the outside is tricky.

4. Use custom-made vinyl overlays for the Altezzas. Do a search -- there's a guy that is selling them for around $30. A little fussy to apply, but they seem to look pretty good in pictures. Don't know about long-term ahedsion, but if worse comes to worst, you could just rip the old ones off and apply a new set.

Good luck, whichever path you decide to go.

If you have air bubbles, the main problem with overlays, they can easily be removed with a BRAND NEW needle. Just poke and push with you fingers. There are also application directions out there, and they're the same as the clear bra application directions from 3M, I believe.
