the 6-speed tranny can't go 140MPH in forth gear you have to switch to 5th.

Well the reason al traps 137 in fourth gear is mainly due to the fact that he can shift at 9,000 rpms.

on the 5spd.. my 03 evo ive hit 187mph gps confirmed and even hit 8600rpms in 5th which is 199mph theoretically.. but never had that confirmed...if you have enough power and with the gearing of the 5 speed its possible

Rollaway could be right. we would have to investigate Indy & F1 r&d to prove it. i think i remember reading about an Indy car having about 9k lbs of downforce at 180 & how much more power they would need to get the car over that speed. if the evo was shaped more like the Enzo, maybe we wouldn't need as much power...

Just as another thing about MR vs the other's, that weight that's shaved off the top..4kg or whatever, actually screws the handling a bit on the stock set-up...i watched a Japanese car video where they were testing it out, they drove the mr plain, and then put a big sheet on the roof of the car to simulate the 4kg and it was faster with the extra 4kg...maybe it's just a JDM Evo VIII thing, but still

So what's the rpm of the six-speed tranny, staying in 4th gear and running a 140mph 1/4 mile? Who can calculate that?

I'm looking at the chart of RPM vs Speed of the two transmissions (attached). This chart, if I recall correctly, was made by one of our forum members, but it doesn't look accurate from what we're hearing from Al.

Can we just take the two gear ratios (the 4/5 and the 4/6) and do a proportionate comparison to get the answer?

Anyway, the chart's at the bottom (see thumbnail below)

And is a quote of gear ratios posted by "plokivos" Thanks plokivos:

evo 8 gear ratio
Gear Ratios
1: 2.928:1
2: 1.950:1
3: 1.407:1
4: 1.031:1
5: 0.720:1
Final drive: 4.529:1

Evo MR gear ratio

Type: 6-Speed Manual close-ratio
CVT Ratio: Not Available
1st Gear Ratio: 2.909:1
2nd Gear Ratio: 1.944:1
3rd Gear Ratio: 1.434:1
4th Gear Ratio: 1.100:1
5th Gear Ratio: 0.866:1
6th Gear Ratio: 0.693:1
2nd Reverse Ratio: 2.707:1
Final Drive Ratio: 4.583:1

Al, what's your RPM when you hit the quarter mile finish line? You're at 137mph in 4th gear running what rpm?

If someone can give some really accurate rpm at speed (of course we'll have to fudge and assume the same variance from stock in wheel circumference...so let's assume running the same wheels as whoever has hard data on their car),

then we should be able to calculate the rpm of the same trap speed in 4th gear on the MR by using:

1.031:1 = drive ratio of 4th on Evo8 5-speed (henceforth referred to as 4th/5)
1.100:1 = drive ratio of 4th on MR 6-speed (henceforth referred to as 4th/6)
RPM = rpm of 4th/5 at trap speed (Al's trap if we can get it...137mph)

thus (1.100/1.031) X RPM = rpm of 4th/6 at same trap speed in quarter mile

The Enzo actually sacrificed topspeed for more downforce.. like it matters for that car

Looks like it matches up darn close to what Big Al said to me, on the chart the 4th gear in the MR tops out at 113, Al said "around 110". Close enough for government work

Now, what would interest me would be putting the final drive gears from the 5 speed into the MR. That would give you higher speeds in each gear, and probably better 1/4 mile times than either of the other setups..... oh, and lower high speed cruising RPM's for better fuel economy as well

Boooo, test it like Top Secret Supra! Do the highway run 3 in the morning! lol
