There is a clear, plastic protective coating which is cut from a template (just as you've shown above), and applied as a large sticker. The brand name is Ultrashield (I think it's ultrashield.com) and the material is expensive and made by 3M. There may be other knock-offs, but the 3M stuff is widely considered to be the end-all of the clear coatings. When looking into protecting my new MR, I talked to a lot of people...including a custom paint shop and the owner of Ultrashield. Turns out that the custom paint shop (against their own financial interests) told me NOT to touch the factory paint...that to clear coat the new factory finish would cause it to chip larger chips if it did get a chip in it. So I went with the ultrashield. The owner said, in response to my wanting to put it on myself "I tell you what. I'll just send you two Ultrashields...first one's on me. You go ahead and put it on yourself...then call me when you're done and we'll get you to a professional installer to do the second one." Made it crystal clear that, without any doubt, this is a professional application material....not one you can apply yourself.
I went with the Ultrashield, professional installer in Phoenix (who did a VERY good job). There are professional installers all over the country. Many of the installations in Phoenix were on 6-figure cars. This guy had done TWO McLaren's, a bunch of Ferraris and Lambos, etc, etc, etc. The dealerships all knew him by name and many use his services for customers before cars leave the showroom floors. Very important to get a professional installer. Also, can't do the wheel-wells...not enough metal to wrap the material on. Evo is about the hardest car there is to wrap. Such a comlex bumper and all.
So there's my sum total knowledge of protective layers. Good luck.
By the way...be prepared to spend about $500 for the Ultrashield. I was shocked
....but I'm really glad that I did it.
