im about to but an MR on feb, but im thinking about an M3
im about to but an MR on feb, but im thinking about an M3
on feb 2, i am scheduled to buy a new car. the evo has been my dream car for the past year. i have a good paying income that will let me pay off this car in about 6 months. right now, i am debating over an MR and a BMW M3. i know they are in different classes.
i want an evo but i have enough cash for an m3.
(i think i saw a forum post either here or on the m3 forum of a comparision between these two cars, but i cant find it)
1. i want a sportier look, and i am in more for speed. for the MR, i will enjoy modding the car, and upgrading the turbo. bmws will be difficult to mod, let say for example the exhaust, which willl cost more than a grand. i also like the turbocharger, having a BOV that goes "psssshhh."
2. mitsubishi might be going down (i heard that there are two dealerships around my area that are closing). plus, evos are kinda crappy in the interior on the inside. also, not to mention the maintenance of the car, like the clutch that i heard is weak.
3. M3's are way more common than evos, and MRs will be way more rare. driving down the road, you may see 2 or 3 M3s, but you will only see an evo once every week.
4. M3's will have a better resale value than the MR. i heard from these forums that the price of the evos depreciate too much,
i thkn the best thing to do is really go take a test drive of both. right now, i am leaning more towards the MR still, but im still taking into consideration the M3, which I will have enough cash for.

I also debated on whether getting a new M3 or my Evo.
The Evo ended up winning out since I already have an E36 M3.
The Evo will take much more readily to mods than the M3 will. So, if you're planning on modding - the Evo is a much more sensible choice.
I don't plan on getting a new BMW until the 'next' generation M3 comes out.
For me - the fun factor was what did it for me. The Evo is a much more fun car to drive.
Good luch with your choice - either way - you can't go wrong.

EVO interior really isn't that bad if you really look at it.
Just take a look inside BMW, the Cadillac STS I looked into the other day, the interior designs are relatively the same. Square air vents and pretty basic stuff on the dash.
I'd get (and got) an EVO just for the fact that there aren't many made and around my area (Florida).
If you do get the m3 though make sure to get that sweet blue color they sell

hehe, i know. i am still leaning towards the evo, about 3 hours from when i posted it. but i really want to get more out of my income, heck i can raise my budget to about $75k, but i still want the evo. i could get the m3 and mod that one, but i dont really find it practical spending more than a grand for an exhaust.
what cars would u suggest in that budget range? errrr, still leaning towards the MR.

I replaced an '03 M3 with an '03 Evo. I tracked, and daily drove both cars so I would compare them this way:
The M3, as you would expect with a $50K + car, has better build quality, better paint, and has much nicer materials & design of the interior. The Evo actually has a better driving position, and better visibility. Both cars have pedals well setup to heel and toe. they both have nice steering wheels (M3 a little chunkier) which I prefer. Shifter & clutch feel are about equal, both could use a lesson from honda here. The Evo steering is much sharper and quicker, which is a big advantage. BUT the M3 is now offered with a competition package which has a quicker ratio which may address this. The M3 is much quieter in terms of wind/road/driveline noise but the engine makes a lot of "mechanical" type noises: rattles, whirrs, buzzes, etc. even under normal driving. When you are driving hard though the M3 motor sounds amazing, exotic even, like the hand assembled piece that it is. It is really the best feature of the car. The engine has amazing throttle response, loves to rev, and has a nice broad power band. As far as handling goes I would give the edge to the EVO. Stock the M3 has staggered tire setup (225 f/255r) which promotes too much understeer. I tracked my car with 265s f/r and it was nice and nuetral and would really respond to throttle steer& trailing thottle oversteer. The Evo is more point and shoot, so maybe at the limit the M3 is a little more fun, but the Evo is more forgiving. Brakes are much better on the Evo (once you change pads) Ride in the evo is rougher, but I have not driven the MR so it maybe is closer. The Evo Recaros are a little better than the M3 seats. As far as straightline performance goes, the Evo (stock) could maybe hang with M3 through the top of 3rd gear, then the M3 is going to walk it. But if you plan to mod the car the Evo is a 10, and the M3 is probably a 4. It is very expensive to get any kind of serious gains out of an M3. lets say 15K for headers, race cats, exhaust, delage airbox, software, 3.91 gears, +++. All of that nets you 50HP! Gods knows how much ridiculous power you can get out of an Evo with 15K. Overall, you I really enjoyed both cars, but I just find the Evo more fun to drive, more fun to work on. The Evo is just sharper, the M3 is a very good car with a great engine. If you take that away, you are left with a 330i with the ZHP package. My buddy has one which I have driven frequently, and that car bores me in about 15mins. However, if you are looking for more of luxury car experience, better dealers (although I heard plenty of horror stories about BMW dealers), and want to prestige from your ride, get the M3. The Evo impresses no one except yourself!

Do you date debs or bad girls? If you wanted a bike, would you buy a HD or a BMW? I never popped the hood on my BMW. Except for the clutch install, which the dealer did at no labor, I do not let anyone touch my Evo but me. Why not let the kind of a car person you are determine what kind of car you buy. I chose between an Sti and the Evo.

I would take into consideration the c6 corvette. These are great cars inside and out that fit your price range. Plenty of room for mods. I had an '02 Z06 and loved it. Looking forward to the new c6 z06 with 500 hp, also has the same torque level as the M5 385lbs produces at 1600 rpms (can you say tire smoke!). Anyways good luck with your choice, I have a my evo now, but still miss the luxury and perfomance of the z06.

This is how I look at the subject, an e46 m3 is anywhere from the base msrp of 48k to 53k right? and an MR is around 34k? I say use the money on the MR or an RS and use the money that you DIDNT spend on the m3 or even the afforementioned C6 corvette (or the z06) and you will have a better performer than both of them. Thats how i look at it anyway...
not to bash my baby but if i have the choice between an Evo or M3
i will not think twice and jump on the M3 just cuz i like FR cars and the M3 has alwasy been my favorite among all european car if you have the money go for the m3

this theory only works if he pay the car upon delivery
