Evo 9 Details

Evo Goes Out With A Bang

The number's up for the Evo VIII. Our exclusive images reveal the new Mitsubishi Evo IX in showroom trim for the first time, ahead of its UK launch in June.

The ninth incarnation of the legendary rally-bred four-door will be the final version to be based on the current-generation Lancer saloon, and the most powerful. An all-new Evo X will arrive in 2007. As you would expect, Mitsubishi has pulled out all the stops to make sure the car seen here will be a suitably thrilling last hurrah.

Although the changes are subtle, the designers have carried out a series of modifications to keep the Evo looking sharp next to the soon-to-be-facelifted Subaru Impreza. The most significant alterations can be seen from the front, where a new bumper has been fitted, incorporating integrated oval foglamps. However, given the machine's performance, it's the rear that most drivers will get the best glimpse of on the road.

To provide a more distinctive look for the back end, designers have added a new bumper with a black lower section, along with the roof-mounted aerodynamic aid called the 'vortex gener-ator', which was first seen on the Evo VIII MR range. Mechanically, the key

changes for the new model will come under the bonnet. While the same turbocharged 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine is being used, Mitsubishi technicians have added variable valve timing to provide even more power. As a result, each model will benefit from an increase of around 20bhp over the VIII.

However, there will be no top-of-the-range 400bhp variant. The most powerful Evo IX will be the FQ-340. Cynics have suggested that's because 44 of the 100 limited-edition FQ-400 versions of the Evo XIII built remain unsold.

All models will offer four-wheel drive, combined with Mitsubishi's proven Active Centre Differential and Super Active Yaw Control, to provide breathtaking grip and pace. Prices and specs have yet to be confirmed, but buyers should expect only a minor increase over the cost of the current Evo VIII. That means the line-up would start at around £25,000.

The all-new Evo X, meanwhile, will build upon its predecessor's strengths, with a turbocharged powerplant producing a mighty 320bhp and 431Nm of torque in standard tune. More distinctive styling will combine with the trademark bodykit and spoiler to make sure the car stands out from the crowd.
