4 or 5 Qts for an oil change
4.8 qts+ Make sure you turn your car on to cycle the oil before topping it off. Your oil level will drop. So put in like 4.5 quarts and then turn your car on for a few seconds and then top it off. Make sure to put the oil cover back on

Your method guarantees an over fill.

I bet there are some people out there that just fill it up and check it without turning the car on before topping it off just to check their levels a few weeks later and think they are burning oil, when they never filled it up properly in the first place.

i generally fill from 4.6-5.0. a little overfill isnt gonna hurt anything. you SHOULD run your engine for a few seconds and let the oil cycle through the filter, because the filter DOES hold about .5 or so qts.
remember that the amount of oil that will be required will depend on if you're doing a hot or cold oil change. ideally, when you first remove the filter and drain the oil from the pan, the engine should be dead cold, like in the morning or something, so that all the oil will drain. this will require more on the side of 5 qts. however, if you do a hot change, then you will not be able to drain the last bit of oil, and you will side more with the 4.5 or so qts.
