Personally, I would rather have the MR, mainly because of the enjoyment factor with little money spent on mods. I went thru a very similar decision before I got my MR. My choices were either an R32 GT-R or the MR. When I started thinking about parts and what not, as well as reputable local shops, the decision was alot easier to make. Parts for the GT-R were/are 2-3 times more than parts for the MR. I'm sure this would reign true for a true JDM S15 as well. The other questions you have to ask yourself are, Do you like instant accelleration? AWD launches, or do you like to spin alot? RWD launches. Wanting to do any drifting?, or just out to have fun? To me, now that I've had my MR for a month, the decision was simple.
Just my O2's worth.

I used to own a JDM S15, and I now own a JDM Evo 8.
Both cars are very differnt to drive, and offer a very different kind of fun. The evo is definatly faster stock, not just in a straight line either. However not much beats the fun of a rear wheel drive car. Period. And I believe the S15 is one of the finest rear drive small coupes around. So balanced, very easy to mod. All you car enthusiasts owe it to yourselves to go and drive a slightly modded S15. Its out of this world. I had about 180kW at the rear wheels, and some Tein coilovers its was just a blast to drive. I had done a few mods to my S15, and it was as fast as my evo is now, but I think its a real drivers car, its a challenge and you have to respect it. the evo is much more point and shoot to me.
But I wanted a 4 door more practical car I can take a group of friends snowboarding in so the Evo it had to be. I still get flashes of regret that I sold that car, one day maybe when I get a decent two car garage I can have all to myself I will get one again.

I wish that I could drive an S15 or actually any car set up for drifting because I just don't get why that car is so desirable. I imagine if I had the chance to drive one, I might understand a little better. I would say take the Evo, but my opinion really isn't worth much since I haven't ever driven a drift car.
