I'm just here to chime in on the "Evo". Living in CO, I'm very much interested in AWD vehicles, so performance cars that don't break the bank really comes down to an Evo or STI (there are a couple others...but I'm keeping it simple.) I liked the Evo better due to the heritage and style. When you talk about "Speed" with an Evo, you really need to look at overall performance to get a good "feel". In the 1/2 mile, it's gonna get killed (relatively speaking here.) If you put it on a road course, well...all of a sudden it outruns a lot of cars that are being talked about. Braking and handling are huge in my book, and the Evo wins out there by a landslide in its price range. I'm not a drag racer, and never plan to be one...but I do like hitting a road course from time to time where I can corner hard and fast, and give the brakes a good workout as well as the power source, so with that...an Evo is a great ride.

A car like an EVO is not really a car to compare stock vs stock with. The EVO is bread and developed to be modified. That's the whole inspiration bread from the rEVOLUTIONary WRC car of its time. I can attest that only $1-2k in mods can make any non Z06 vette blush as you pull away from them. I look at it this way .....

I bought my EVO for 29,600 +2,000 =$31,600 >stock vette which is still almost 50k .

Maybe driving stock isn't for me, but for very small investment you can get great rewards. Just don't go bonkers and crank your PSI up like crazy or do stupid $h1t.

Since you didn't say 1/2 mile STRAIGHT, I'll say not one factory-built production car EVER. 1/8 mile, right turn, 1/8 mile, right turn, 1/8 mile left turn, 1/8 mile left turn.

Vette (Z06 or regular)
M3
...stock vs. stock.

But I think the list would be much much shorter if it existed at all if you said what street cars under $40k would beat an Evo.

Then people would start posting pictures of track toys.

Off the line with the clk55 amg the evo would probably be neck to neck but top end it wouldnt keep up.
