I was on the freeway and the car jacknifed. I turned to the right so I did not go into the center divider (concrete). The car went off the road and went into some dirt area when the wheel flew off a rolled away and the side dropped down. I slid into some dirt in the side of the road where I got stuck. I did not think the wheel was off the car. I got out and looked to see the hub attached and the outer wheel rolled several yards forward. Shattered my right side mirror and other small damages.

Was there any damage to the wheel prior to this?? Hit any big potholes? How many miles on the car?

That's a pretty serious incident. Good to hear you weren't hurt.

No prior damage, no potholes, 14K miles. Alway had tires at factory recommended pressure. 29R/32F psi and had the wheels rotated regularly. 4 regular lugs and 1 wheel lock per wheel. Tire was still in good shape, it had good tread and did not blow out or go flat from looking at it. Mitsubishi dealership its at is going to have to look over this. If the wheel did not blow up on I could have just got back on the freeway and drove to Vegas cause the car would have still been drivable had that not happened.

Yikes. I worry about the quality of some aftermarket wheels, but I would never have worried about an OEM wheel prior to seeing this.

Were you pulling a trailer or something? Not that it matters, cause there is no way a wheel should shatter like that. Was it totally stock wheel? You didn't have it powdercoated or heat treated in any way, did you? Wow, that is just damn scary. Maybe it's time for those new rims I was thinking of getting.

How does a car jacknife in the first place? Did it like fold in half at a 90 degree angle like a tractor trailer?
