Mitsu EXPECTS to sell 4000-6000 cars in the US the fisrt year. It is not LIMITED to 4000-6000 cars. Tell me why they would choose to make it limited? They are looking to make customers not just sales. Do you think they want to turn people away and have those people go buy Subarus? Dont believe the hype of a message board or any dealership. Mitsu will sell as many as they can.

Our beloved EVO will be more of a limited edition car than the Imprezza WRX..
Taken from Subaru Page..

".....Impreza sales were largely supported by the very popular Impreza WRX, accounting for 18,376 unit sales since its March introduction. "

I think the problem with is that the factory can't product the volume for evo's. I think the record was 10,000 unit for the world and now they are adding 4500 on top of that not including production change. I feel 4500 is the # they shooting for and we'll see how many the factory is able to produce. I'd bet after this year production will ramp up.

Then again who knows what will happen. Maybe they'll keep evo's limited and produce the Ralliart lancer to compete against the WRX which hold all the volume? We'll see and time will tell.

I see what you are saying but....the EVO is now a world car. I really doubt Mitsu wants to put all this effort into a car and only plan to sell 10,000 cars worldwide. Its probably going to take the sale of 3000 EVOs just to pay for all the marketing. There is nothing special about the EVO that they cannot build 50 or 60,000 cars a year.

The Evo is supposedly being built on a slowed assembly line. The extensive additional welding that goes into the Evo used to be done by hand. Sometime during the production of the VII, the production was shifted to a slowed assembly line that could handle this welding. So Mitsu will be able to produce more Evos than before, but nowhere near 50 or 60,000 cars a year...

Yes, there's no way they could produce as many Evo's as they wanted. There is quite a bit special about the Evo - the stiff chassis doesn't happen via magic.

One other factor is that the Evo doesn't generate much profit for MMC. Much like the NSX for Honda, it's more a image-builder than a profit-builder for the corporation. Profit-builders are the base Lancer, the Galant, or the Pajero. The Evo 8 gets you into the dealership, and they'll be more than happy if you leave with *any* of their vehicles other than the Evo 8. More profit and less hassle for them.

Cheers,

Paul Hansen

People thought this about Integra Type R's too. And Honda didn't step up production to meet each order placed. Some people said that the assembly plant where the Type R engines were hand assembled couldn't handle the extra capacity.

Because the truth is, there's more to the production numbers than, "how many could we sell". Things like current production line capacity, parts availability, and available budget play into how many of a certain object can be made per period of time....So if the assembly line that makes the Evos in JP is at 90% capacity, now that it is making Evos for a few more markets than it was last year, than they really won't be able to increase production easily without spending lots of money upgrading it's facilities.
