2003 or 2004

I was wondering what the smarter move would be buying a used EVO. I know the 2003 was the first year in the U.S. that usually means first year bugs and I was wondering how much wiser it is to go with a 2004 vs. a 2003. What were some problems with the 03's and how much better were the 04's?

pretty much the same. 04s get rock chip protectors on rear (some 03s came with these. Also the 04 got a in cabin air filter.

04 brought out the regular model, regular model with SSL and the RS with no ABS but limited in the front. Apart from that and what use2vtec stated both models are identical.

I put the rock chip protectors on my 03 for 15 bucks, and the air filter is also a similarly retrofitable product if you want it. The main thing you should look at is condition. Also 04's were available with the SS&L package which is sunroof, infinity audio, and leather, which was not available on the 03. The 03's can have a sunroof but no audio package or leather. Leather interior also gets you rear headrests.

For this one, car to car variance will be a much bigger factor than model year. You'll want to find one with a responsible and trustworthy former owner. You maybe not get all the options you want when buying a used car, but you can sure save a pile of dough. I would focus on finding a car that has been properly maintained and is in the mileage range your looking for, rather than trying to target an 04 or 03 specifically.
