Question about the stock Advan tyres

Down here in NZ the snow season is just about to start, so I will be driving down to the only close mountain in my 03 Evo 8. now I hear a lot of talk on this forum about how the stock Advans are terrible for driving in the snow. So if I am going to be driving up groomed roads and then through some snow will I still need to get chains like I would for a FF or will the AWD be good enough on the stock tyres as long as I take it easy?
It dosn't get cold enough for snow anywhere except on the mountain so I won't be changing to different rims and snow tyres. This is really just for the mountain pass, and around up on the mountain.

But we don't have enough snow in NZ (well where I am in the north island) for me to get dedicated snow tyres.
All I will drive on snow is about 30 mins up and 30 mins down the mountain. Just wondering if I will need to get chains on the car or not for this.

listen to him
listen to me too
we live around the same area(I dont know him tho)
and I tried the stockers for ****s and giggles and well stopping aint fun and turning from a stop aint fun either(well it is when no ones around )
you really cant go more than 25% throttle without losing traction
turning while cruising....yea thats fun too

my advice
rent a car or but some snow tires on it

I live in Central PA, I can't count the number of times I've gone into anti-lock. It's easy to take off on the stockers, but damn it's hard to stop.

Here in Colorado Springs, we ususally have good weather...but for the few times in the winter we do get some serious snow, I have a dedicated set of wheels for winter. I'm a bit paranoid about getting stuck in the snow on advans (it had them when I bought it in March, and wow that was a bit spicey.) I'd highly suggest getting a good all-season tire, or a set of dedicated winter tires to swap out. If you can dig up a set of wheels as well, it makes for easy swapping when necessary. Be extremely careful if you run advans in any cold conditions...they don't like it.

Yeah, in Harrisburg, so I don't have to drive~ I'll bring my buddy that drives an STI so we can harrass him.

Ok so they are so bad that I will have to get a second set of tyres just for the occasional (5-6 times a year) excursion to the snow?
Wow ok then guys cheers for the heads up.
Has anyone got any suggestions for some decent tyres to put on the Evo then? I have read a couple of posts where someone has chucked some tyres on an Evo 8 after the Advans wore out and the handling has gone to ****. Keep in mind I will be driving in normal conditions 99.9% of the time. (ha just the 0.1% I have to watch when I'm on teh snow huh?)

Dude try Pirelli Nero M+S. I have them for winter and no complaints even with trips to Tahoe.

at least get some all seasons... It took me about 1/2" of snow to stop driving my evo in the snow with the Advans. If you are climbing mountains with the OEM's then you better watch your butt. They are horrendous in the snow, worse than anything I've ever driven.

Cool thanks for the suggestions guys, I would hate to plummet off the side of a mountain in a firey ball of doom. When I'm due to get some tyres I'll check out those Pirelli's.

Any other suggestions for decent all weather tyres?
