strange clunking sound

This problem is really getting to me, because 1 day I will barely hear it, and then the next day it sounds horrible the whole ride. When it happens... over large bumps it will either make no noise, or make a crazy loud clunk, but most of the time it doesnt do it on big bumps. The little bumps are where it goes crazy, mostly on uneven roads that make you feel like a speed boat in the evo. Its coming from the drivers side wheel area, Im not sure if its the strut, something loose, ..i have no idea. Anyone have a problem like this?

Just part of having an Evo. Mine does it and other people have posted threads with the same problem. I think some people said the struts needed to be remounted or something like that. You can probably find the threads doing a search. Good luck.

Assuming the clunk is coming from your front suspension, there are about 10 other threads about this. Do a search.

I had the same problem. I had the clunking noise everytime i took a turn and went over a bump. It's most likely your bushings. If your car is still under warranty then bring it to Mitsubishi and it'll all be coverd under warranty, the only kicker is that they must hear the clunking when they drive it. First when i brought it they said nothing was wrong, so i said whatever. Then a couple of weeks later it got worse and brought it back in and they heard it then replaced. it's most likely your bushings so have it checked out. Alot of people have been having this problem. Good Luck

yea that's what happened to me. Surely they'll hear it and fix the problem. I know it was really pissing me off too. It's because of that problem i pulled back from lowering my car. Damn Mitsu!

Does it sound like someone is shaking your exhaust? If that is the sensation, then that is what I get going over large bumps sometimes. I just turn off the car and restart it to make it go away.

You ain't alone. After Mits redid my horrid factory alignment, I got the clunk in the rrear. Just when I go over med/small bumps and especially when cold. The dealer says "normal" and I'm like is it normal that only 1 wheel does this? Whatever, just document that I was in here at 10K for this and I'll be bach.

I think the Maxima crew have the same issue and here is a good write up on a potential fix.

I took my car to a local shop hoping they could diagnose the problem, and I would just get it fixed on my part, because I hate taking it to the dealer. Ive been holding off on installing my downpipe because of this problem. Ill let everyone know what the dealer says/does when I get back monday. Last time I was their they charged me $125 because they said they couldnt reproduce a problem I was having before. And they wouldnt let me get my keys until I paid or I would of just took off.
