I'd like to confirm if what my friend said is true. Is it possible that the cooling effect of dry ice will improve engine performance and fuel economy of cars if applied on around a car's engine.

If you use it to cool the intake charge, yes.

Packing the air box in dry ice is an old drag raceing trick. Just beware of condensation as even very tiny water droplets hitting your turbo fan can ruin your day.

little water doesnt hurt your engine... them little droplets will dry put from the heat and boosted air........ You can use it on upper intake or the manifold(kinda hard)

Be careful using dry ice, if it contacts water, especially warm water, it can produce enough gas to cause a sort of explosion. One of the latest Darwin's awards was a kid who put dry ice in a pop bottle and added boiling water, the bottle was between his legs.

yea it does help. i know a guy with an older supercharged buick, he uses ice to cool it. he was impressed when he heard the evo's had a intercooler sprayer kit.
