Changing the Wheels
Is anyone in here planning on sticking different wheels on their EVO? I've seen some EVO pics in another thread with different wheels. 18" would be nice but what about weight, and performance? I think i'm keeping the 17"....

If I were you I'd stick with the 17s. 18" wheels would probably be added unsprung weight plus even less sidewall in the tires which is only good for car shows in my opinion. The stock wheel and tire package should be great from a performance perspective. When the stock tires wear out you might consider putting 245 width tires on there because they will fit perfect on 8" wide wheels.

Totally agree about the performance aspect. A good way to lower transmission loss is to fit lighter wheels and tyres and stay 17 inch. I got 17 x 8 inch Speedline wheels (7.8kg instead of 10.2 kg each) and Yokohama AO32R (H) tyres that weigh 8kg instead of 10kg. That's 4.4kg times 4 = 17.6kg less UNSPRUNG weight, which is a lot.

Yeah, i'm not planning on changing anything wheel or suspension related (wont have much cash around anyways after I buy heheh). I've got 225/40ZR18 on my car now and they do ride a bit harder than the 17's I had before. Not by much though....once I got tociko shocks the ride really got smooth. However, the wheels do bend easily. I'm definately sticking with the stock wheels. I'm just wondering about anyone else in here...

Total weight x 10% = 3.2 kg savings or
Total weight = 3.2 kg/10% = 32 kg
Convert this to pounds by multiplying 32 kg by 2.2 and you get 70.4 pounds for all four rims or 17.6 pounds per rim. Now as far as the weight of the tires goes.....

said the new rims are 10% lighter than the Evo VII ones. So the the equation would be total weight of Evo VII times 10%= weight savings achieved in Evo VIII rims. The Evo VIII would be 15.84 per stock Evo VIII rim.
total weight savings=3.2kg
weight savings per rim=3.2kg/4=0.8kg=0.8 x 2.2 lbs= 1.76lb
weight of Evo VIII rims= weight of Evo VII rims - weight savings per rim= 17.6lb-1.76lb=15.84lb.
Stocked Evo VIII rims are really light for a 17x8 at 15.84lb.
