Stock Turbo or Upgraded Turbo?

Which would you rather have for daily driving?

A 350whp stock turbo with no lag and early spool up? 320 Wheel Torque hits at 3700rpm and maintains the 320wtq across the powerband till it hits 300wtq at 6000rpm, and drops to 260wtq at 7000rpm.

or

A 420whp upgraded turbo with a huge lag and crappy spool up? 350wtq hits at 5500rpm maintains it at 6000rpm and 320wtq by 7000rpm?

Remember this is for street daily driving

a 3071 turbo will have stock spool up and can achieve 400hp+

Mine is street, and daily driven about 60 miles a day, and close to 400hp on this turbo @ 23lbs, no problems in the past 6 months with the mods Knock on wood

I heard the 3071R is an awesome turbo for the street, pretty close to the 16G for the spool but with much more power.
But I will stick with the 16G, fair enough for daily drive.

I wouldnt mind more power especially if the turbo has the same spool up as stock. I am more worried about the clutch and flywheel. any suggestions on a reliable replacement. Say something that is capable of handling 450 yet still daily driveable.

if tuned correctly, a bigger turbo can run just like stock except it slams you back in the seat harder. for example, Ralliart can build you an EVO with a 4G64 & a 20G turbo factory warrantied with about 440 crank hp. works like stock & your powerband is from 3k-8k RPM & it's less than 1/2 the cost of an FQ400!!!

No issues with the stock hairdryer. I make 356/345 AWD hp/tq on 93 pump. 388/408 AWD hp/tq c-16 . Aside from cams/exhaust/ECM my ride runs like a spooked stallion, and is almost OEM, I'm not a parts changer like most of the self proclaimed tuners. I can make over 400 hp on c-16 by going to a larger FMIC, and a few minor tweaks. I love these cars for those reasons

I plan on upgrading my driving skills before I worry about upgrading the turbo...

This has been one thing on my mind daily. That is should i keep the stock turbo or swap to a larger one. I'm in Baghdad, Iraq right now for the next year and all I have is time to figure this out. My best friend works at Topspeed in Atlanta and he is very well at what he does. He and I have gone back and forth on what to do with my car when I get back. I think I'm sticking with stock turbo. There are many possibilities with that turbo, but you will be coming out of the pocket big time. Either way it is expensive, but not as much with the stock turbo. I alredy have a lot done to my car and I still will be coming out of the pocket 20 large more. Doug pulled 420awhp and 450ftlbstq with the stock turbo on the evo without a lot of what i am going to do to mine. He is good as are several other tuners, but I think he has the edge. These are not exaggerated numbers so please don't question them. What I want everyone to focus on is the fact that if you tweak the stock turbo a bit the boost will hold as far as your motor will go. If you build your motor which runs about 5000 or more you can run to 9grand so imagine the possibilities. I am determined to pull at least 450awhp with the stock turbo without nitrious. I am certain that Doug will make it happen. I will build my engine so I will spray too. Someone on here almost broke into the 10s without nitrious so I'm hoping to even if it means spraying. If you want to switch out turbos by all means do it, but do it right. You cant just swap turbos and expect huge gains. You have tp pay to play. That is what it comes down to in the end. So join the Army and go to Iraq and you can play. i will let you know how my build goes, but of course not until I come home. The car is going to start getting built in June so if Doug gets it done before I get home you should at least have some dyno numbers. You'll have to wait till next March for times though. Good luck, but end state I'd stick with the stock turbo. Talk to yall later. DO IT!!

It's not having to go fast, it's just knowing you can if you want to...

BINGO! Drivability is a bigger factor for me than ultimate numbers, but its certainly possible to make good numbers on the stock turbo and not sacrifice drivability (or even pass an inspection in your state which seems to be an almost universally ignored aspect of modding)

90% of us just don't need that big turbo on the street, and the rest.. Well.. they just haven't realized it yet.
