tryiing to decide between evo or sti
Better handling, better looking, and more honest Horsepower... Best my friend's stock STi could manage was 13.2 @ 101 while I clicked off 13.0 @ 105! Atleast for the 05's we are much closer to 300 HP stock where as the STi's stock 300 HP is a bit optimistic. Bolt on's with stock turbo can take you to high 10's in an Evo where as an STi will be stuck at low 12's, maybe high 11's. Engine wise you are also going to support higher HP levels before being forced to open up the bottom end.
A magazine did a test of both and they were within a few HP I believe the evo was higher.
STI's will be getting faster as more tuners buy them and mod them up, like TT will be doing. We will have to wait and see.
I had an sti for 3 days them my sons friend pulled up in one so I took it back and got the evo.

I had the same dilema....but now I am finalizing my purchase of an 03 EVO so...you know what I choose :-)
I have been a subie fan for years and have had many and still race with a ton of subie nuts.
My opinions:
STI Pros: I think the STI is a better looking car, it has nicer interior and overall has more power potential and more tourque (it is a bigger engine remember). It also has a relatively bullet proof tranny. Subaru dealers are much more performance oriented around here at least (the local dealership here sponsers a SOLO2 car). Easy clutch installs. I also think the Subies have a better overall fit and finish.
STI Cons: Boxer engines are a PITA to work on. Modifying the STI is a good bit more expensive than an EVO (can you say 4 camshafts?) The biggest downside for me about the subie (no offense meant) is that around here at least....the subie guys are like a cult. They remind me of Macintosh users....really zealous about how great Subarus are <grin> I like *many* different cars and would never pull that "nothing is better than mine" crap <shrug> Also...the block on the subie is aluminum...yet the car is not lighter.
EVO Pros: Easier and cheaper to upgrade. It is not a Subaru <snicker>. Very sharp steering. Cast iron block.
EVO Cons: Not exactly attractive (remember...these are my opinions), iffy transmission. Smaller engine.
Also...just for the record...I personally think the handling differences all the mags talk about between the STI and EVO are overblown. The STI has crappier, narrower tires than the EVO stock. I betcha if you stuck 235 sticky rubber on the STI (instead of the 225 non-sticky stockers) it would be a good bit closer.
Since I want to modify my car to gain more power and do not have an unlimited budget...I went with the EVO :-)
If I had to keep the car stock...I would have went with the Subie.
YMMV

Interesting, in your case I would say the EVO is the better choice. Why because I believe the EVO will offer you more of what it seems like you are looking for.
But before we go any further, let's stop and correct one myth- The STi is all around a more powerful car, not exactly true. While on paper it does look as it has a definite advantage, it just isn't adding up on the real world stage. The EVO since 2003 has obviously been underrated and every year it seems to get even more underrated (meaning it's getting more powerful, just not on paper). The truth, the STi and EVO ever since 2003 have been putting down similiar dyno numbers. While I admit that stock for stock the STi had an advantage over the 2003 and 2004 RS and GSR models, this is not the case for the 2005 and MR models.
The EVO is the better car to mod right now, and that seems to be something you are very interested in doing. You can run 12s on the EVO with very gfew mods and little money. ECU Tuning (Flash or Piggy Back), Turboback, Intake, MBC, Fuel Pump, and Cams will definitly net you more than 300WHP and put you deep in the 12s. Price for all this, well it can be done for under $2,000. Now the STi is no slouch either, but honestly as of now, it's really no contest in the mod department.
The handling the EVO is better, the braking of the EVO is better, the EVO is just all around a better performance car and it has been proven on the track in the United States (Japan is different, much more competitive) countless times. The EVO in the United States seems to be more closely related to it's JDM counterpart, meaning it's all about the performance, with very few compromises. The STi on the other hand has lost some of it's sharpness and become a bit softer for the US market and therefore the STi is most likely a more comfortable car to live with day to day.
If your looking mostly for performance, than the EVO is the car for you, if your looking for performance with a bit more ease and comfort for day to day driving, than the STi is what you are looking for.

Dude get an EVO
1. Easier to Mod
2. Not that heavy on your pockets
3. Handles are RIDICULOUS!
4. They dont blow up as easy.
5. Easier to hit 11sec SAFELY
6. You can spend $2000 more dollars and hit 11 sec.
7. Hit 10's with the STOCK TURBO!
8. Uhh I dont know EVO is just A VICIOUS *** CAR.
Hope that helps!

Stroking an engine, like the 2.5 doesn't meqan more WHP potential, in fact it means less especially when compaired to an inline design. The Evo 2.0 has more WHP potential and can manage faster times Vs. a Stroked motor with a better low end.
the choice for me was easy since the STI wasn't even out yet when I bought my evo.
if you're planning to mod then +1 to all that said modding the evo is more cost effective.
