Vortex W/ no wing still functional?

Anyone know if the Vortex Generator is still functional without a rear spoiler?

That thing, according to Mitsubisihi, does it's effects at over 150 mph (I believe)...so if you are wanting it for function...yes it will work. But won't nearly be as effective with the assistance of a wing -- by the way -- where do you plan on going this fast?

Its rated at 160kmph, no idea what that equates to in MPH.

1.6km = 1mile
160kmph = 100mph

100, that's the carpool lane speed limit! Awesome.

I'm curious about this as well. In theory each one of those little ramps creates a little low pressure eddy behind it. The air traveling over the roof of the car is now broken up into little eddys and sticks to the rear window instead of forming 1 giant eddy right behind the rear window.

The tech statement from Mitsu said that it "increasesd" the effectiveness of the spoiler, which suggests that it doesn't do much on it's own.

Perhaps it just allows more of the air moving over the top of the car to actually reach the wing?

My Friend with an RS put it on without the wing and he side he notices a big difference in High SPeed turning. After 80 he said the car gets REALLY loose but wit the Generator its almost like driving a GSR

It will help to reduce drag by keeping the airflow attached to the rear windshield, but it may have negative effects when it comes to lift without the wing. Keeping the flow attached to the rear windshield will increase the amount of lift created at the rear end of the car. Basically, the end result is reduced drag and reduced downforce. I feel as though I'm rambling now, so I'll stop.

The VG has 3 benefits:
- reduce lift from the roof's trailing edge (minimal)
- reduce drag (minimal)
- improve the effectiveness of the air foil by creating a better air stream for it

So the answer is yes, it will help without a wing, but the effect will be quite minor.

In my car with the big wing, adding it definitely reduced rear floatiness going through T8 at Willow Springs.

The Mitsi tests were at 110mph. Without a wing it will create no downforce. What it does in simple terms is by disturbing the air at the top of the roof, the air then goes down closer to the bottom of the glass/start of the trunck. This allows more air to flow more effective under/over the wing.
Without a wing it would create more drag at the top of the car but allow the air to close up better behind the car. Net effect would probably be a small reduction in overall drag coeffecient.

If you're looking to create some downforce, you could do a 60mm spoiler at 20 degree angle. This could actually reduce the cars drag while reducing rear lift. Steeper angles would create more downforce and start to create more drag. This is from CFD testing I've seen.

as stated, without the wing, its only for looks and only hurts you slightly.
