Car dillemma
It sounds to me that you need something that is reliable, but still enjoyable to drive. I'm a DSM fan myself and I have a Honda too and I know people here may not want to hear it, but I'd maybe consider going the Honda route. Prelude or Integra GSR comes to mind. Still fun and it'll get your *** to school every day. It'll hold you over until you're out of school. Modded cars are definitely money pits. It's no joke. I'd hate to see you regret getting into a 1st-gen DSM and running into reliability issues. You're talking about DSMs that are 10 years old or more. Things just start needing to be replaced to keep them well-maintained.
Bust your *** and put a huge down payment with 5-6 year financing on an evo.
It's what you want.
If you get anything else, you'll just look at it and wish you had gotten the Evo. My evo will be the first car that I bought that I really wanted, not that I needed or was adequate.

a p1 is a special edition (prodrive) impreza wrx. it somewhat resembles a 2.5rs, but thats about the only thing it has in common. widebody, turbocharged, the works.
I agree with getting the EVO. Even an used one. It's what you want. It's what you will be driving day-to-day everyday. Don't mod it. I know it's hard. But once you start, there's no turning back. If evo is absolutely out of the question, then here's what I recommend.
Get a honda (you just can't beat them in reliability, you almost cannot drive it to death)
Or, get a bike that is if you already own a beater. W/ 9K you get top of the line 600cc-even 750cc.
A bike is a great choice for college. You don't even have to pay for parking. Just park it somewhere hidden. My 2 cents.

It's probably better that you don't spend all of your 13k, because anything you get that is old and that will be modded is going to have a much higher chance of breaking and being unreliable, which will be a big pain in the *** in extra bills as well as downtime. I don't want to see you blow your hard-earned (and saved) money on something that breaks down all the time.

I agree with what a couple other people have said - use your money to put a fat down payment on an Evo!!! Seriously, you have enough to place a damn good down payment, and then you'll hardly owe anything on your Evo. And you won't regret it.
Get a Civic, its cheap to own and it will hold its value so that when you have more money you can sell it and get the Evo. You can get a good one used for less than $9,000. Just dont join a Honda board and start bashing Evo's
